Empress’s Congregation of Women

The Blazing World

The Empress’s Congregation of Women is a religious community founded by the Empress in response to the exclusion of women from the Blazing-World’s churches. Under her personal leadership, it gives women instruction in her religion and helps bring them into the faith. Its founding exposes a tension at the heart of the polity: a female sovereign creates a place for women’s worship while the established religious order continues to bar them from public congregations.

Exclusion and the Need for a Congregation

The congregation’s immediate background is the Empress’s inquiry into the Blazing-World’s religious customs. Its priests tell her that the world has one religion and one shared form of worship, consisting of prayers shaped around different needs. Yet women are absent from the congregations. The priests defend this exclusion by arguing that mixed gatherings distract men from devotion; women, they say, pray at home in private closets instead of meeting as a congregation.

The Empress presses the distinction between private prayer and collective religious life: she asks whether women have a congregation of their own to perform divine worship. The answer is no. Her question identifies a gap in the ostensibly unified religious order: women are expected to share its faith but are denied its public institutions. The new congregation directly addresses that gap without, in the account given, changing the existing congregations’ rules.

Foundation and Instruction

After judging the established religion defective, the Empress considers how to convert the people to her own faith. She resolves both to build churches and to assemble women into a congregation, with herself as its head. She intends to teach them the articles of her religion, making the institution a place of instruction as well as worship.

The narrative stresses the women’s intellectual capacities: they are described as quick-witted, subtle in conception, clear in understanding, and solid in judgment. The Empress’s preaching and instruction soon make them devout and zealous Sisters. Her personal authority therefore works through teaching and religious formation, not merely through the fact of her sovereignty.

Role in Conversion and Political Order

The women’s rapid conversion becomes part of the Empress’s wider religious success. The account says that she converts them and, by this means, wins extraordinary love from her subjects throughout the Blazing-World. The congregation thus connects a specific change in women’s religious participation to the broader establishment of the Empress’s faith.

That achievement also carries a tension. The Empress uses persuasive instruction and women’s capacity for devotion to extend religious life, while the society’s existing priests had justified excluding women from public worship. The congregation creates an alternative avenue for participation, but the evidence does not say that women are admitted to the men’s congregations or to public offices. Its significance lies both in what it enables and in the boundary it leaves intact: women gather and receive religious teaching under a female ruler, within a polity whose institutional arrangements had excluded them from shared worship.
