The Standover Man

The Standover Man
Painted Pages
Max Vandenburg paints over pages of Mein Kampf and writes a thirteen-page story for Liesel. The material of propaganda becomes the material of friendship.
A Gift of Recognition
The story portrays Liesel as someone who stands beside him rather than above him. She answers by sleeping beside his hidden space, hand touching shoulder.
The Boxer’s Dream

The Boxer’s Dream
Fighting Hitler
Max imagines boxing Adolf Hitler in the basement. He loses repeatedly before standing again and striking at the mustache.
Inner Victory
The fantasy provides a space where physical weakness does not determine the outcome. Imagination gives Max a private arena beyond the reach of Nazi authority.
The Weather Painting

The Weather Painting
A Borrowed Sky
Max asks Liesel to describe the weather outside. She describes a blue sky, a long rope-like cloud, and a yellow hole of sun.
Shared Horizon
Max paints the girl and himself walking toward the sun. The image gives the confined man an imaginative landscape that exists because Liesel carries the outside world to him.
The Word Shaker

The Word Shaker
A Fable of Power
Max imagines Adolf Hitler cultivating forests of words and using them to control Germany. A girl who understands language climbs higher than anyone else.
Friendship’s Seed
The girl’s tree grows from a tear of friendship. The story argues that words can resist domination when they are rooted in care rather than manipulation.
The Hidden Sketchbook

The Hidden Sketchbook
Memory Preserved
Rosa Hubermann gives Liesel Max’s sketchbook after a shelter reading. It contains portraits, memories, dreams, and the story of their shared life.
A Deferred Return
Max has left, but his images remain. The sketchbook keeps his relationship with Liesel alive until their eventual reunion.
