Marlboro Hospital
The Book of MirrorsMarlboro Hospital is the psychiatric facility to which Derek Simmons was promised a transfer after an attack left him in a coma and with severe amnesia. He stayed there for several months without recovering his memory, making the hospital a place of partial discovery rather than medical restoration—and the setting for his transition back into life outside institutional care.
Transfer and Conditions
While Simmons was committed to Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, Joseph Wieder visited him and promised that he would be moved to Marlboro within three months, where conditions would be much better. The transfer followed the attack on Simmons by another patient in Trenton. After emerging from a coma, Simmons could not recognize anyone or recall even his own name; doctors concluded that his amnesia was genuine, not feigned. In that vulnerable state, he understood Wieder as a caring doctor who offered to treat him without charge and arrange the move.
Life at the Hospital
Simmons remained at Marlboro for a few months, but his memory did not return. He recovered fragments of biographical knowledge—who he was, who his parents were, and which high school he had attended—without regaining the memories that would make those facts feel like a usable past. What he learned about his former life seemed bleak: his mother's death, his history in a mental hospital, an unhappy job, an unfaithful wife, and an accusation of murder. He eventually stopped trying to recover more and resolved to begin again after leaving.
Release and Aftermath
Wieder headed the panel that approved Simmons's release. With nowhere to go, Simmons relied on Wieder again: he found him a place to stay near his own house and employed him as a handyman. Simmons retained practical skills despite his gaps in personal memory; he could repair things without knowing when or how he had learned to do so. Marlboro therefore marks a change in his circumstances, not a cure: he left without recovering his past, but with housing and work that allowed him to start over.
