Mulholland Drive

The Brass Verdict

Mulholland Drive is a winding two-lane road in Los Angeles whose curves and scarce stopping places turn Mickey Haller’s drive to help Lanie Ross into a tense race against time. The road leads him toward the Fryman Canyon overlook, where the attempt to find her becomes uncertain.

Road and Setting

On his way west along Mulholland Drive, Haller follows the serpentine road for half a mile. Fatigue is beginning to catch up with him when his headlights fall on a coyote standing at the roadside. The brief encounter gives the drive a watchful, isolated atmosphere without easing its urgency.

The road also constrains what Haller can do. When he asks Lanie to pull over, she wants to know where: outside the overlooks, the winding two-lane has no safe pull-over spots, and a car stopped around a bend could be struck by passing traffic. Haller tells her to slow down instead.

The Search for Lanie Ross

Haller learns that a police officer has found Lanie on Mulholland Drive, where she should not be driving; she has passed out after handing the officer Haller’s card. Concerned that an arrest could send her back into jail and rehabilitation, Haller asks which jail the officer is taking her to and sets out to reach her.

The Fryman Canyon overlook becomes the crucial stopping point. Haller turns into its parking area from the Valley side, passing a sign that says the lot is closed after sunset. He arrives twelve minutes after promising to be there in less than fifteen, but sees neither Lanie’s car nor a police cruiser. The road’s only safe stopping places have directed the search toward the overlook, yet its empty lot offers no confirmation that he has found her.

Narrative Role

Mulholland Drive functions as more than a route: its bends, lack of pull-outs, and closed-after-dark overlook determine the practical limits of Haller’s response. The contrast between his hurried arrival and the vacant parking area leaves the immediate situation unresolved, making the landscape part of the scene’s suspense.
