Walter Elliot’s bail revoked and then urgently stayed

The Brass Verdict

Walter Elliot’s bail revocation and emergency stay establish that his freedom in the murder case had already been precarious before Mickey Haller considered taking him on as a client. The judge’s account makes the stay a conditional reprieve: Elliot avoided immediate custody, but his liberty was narrowed and placed under a final warning.

Background

While asking Judge Companioni about an entry on the judge’s calendar from the previous week, Haller explained that he had not yet thoroughly reviewed the Elliot case file and asked what the hearing had concerned. Judge Companioni recalled that it was an emergency motion brought by Jerry Vincent after Judge Stanton revoked Elliot’s bail and ordered him remanded to custody. The information reaches Haller—and the reader—not through the hearing itself, but through a brief exchange in chambers.

The Revocation and Emergency Stay

The precipitating breach was Elliot’s trip to a film festival in New York without permission, contrary to one of his bail conditions. Jeffrey Golantz, the prosecutor, saw a picture of Elliot at the festival in People magazine and asked Judge Stanton to revoke bail. Judge Companioni characterized the prosecutor as already unhappy that bail had been granted in the first place. Judge Stanton then revoked it, prompting Vincent to seek emergency relief to prevent his client’s arrest and incarceration.

Judge Companioni stayed the revocation. The intervention prevented the immediate consequence of Judge Stanton’s order, but it did not restore Elliot’s freedom on its earlier terms: the judge modified those terms by requiring him to wear an ankle monitor. The result was neither an unconditional return to bail nor immediate imprisonment, but continued release subject to closer control.

Consequences and Significance

Judge Companioni described his ruling as giving Elliot a second chance and made clear that there would be no third. His warning turns the account from a procedural explanation into practical notice for Haller: if he retained Elliot, another violation could not be expected to receive the same accommodation. The episode therefore supplies an early measure of the constraints surrounding the defense, before Haller has completed his review of the file.
