The Cabin at the End of the World

The University of Pittsburgh is the institution where Eric completed his degree after his parents refused to pay for his final semester when he came out. His path to graduation involved couch surfing, working near campus, and eventually paying the remaining tuition himself; the degree also became the occasion for his parents to reconcile with him.

Eric’s Education

After his parents withdrew financial support for his final semester, Eric relied on friends for places to stay and worked at a popular sandwich shop near campus. He continued that work for two years, using his earnings to pay the remaining college bill and complete his degree.

Graduation and Reconciliation

Eric’s parents appeared at a friend’s apartment on the day he received his diploma. In tears, they apologized and gave him a check covering the college bill, with some extra money. Eric used the check to make a move to Boston, linking his graduation not only to the completion of his studies but also to a new start after the rupture with his parents.
