Third Body Found

The Third Victim
A Pattern Emerges
Eve Strong and Bill Nicol find Louise Usher displayed in a public place, dressed in the killer’s rough tunic and missing part of her little finger. Her covered head sets this discovery apart from the earlier murders.
The crime scene yields little immediate evidence, but the repeated clothing and missing fingertip confirm a disturbing pattern. Three women have now been killed in just over seven weeks.
The Investigation Begins
At the mortuary, Felix Carver confirms Louise’s identity and finds signs of prolonged abuse. Eve’s own history of captivity makes the case especially difficult to approach without being overwhelmed by it.
Felicity Disappears

A Missing Woman
The Next Possible Victim
A new report names Felicity Wanless, twenty-two, as missing after a night out. Eve’s team recognizes the timing: the killer may take a replacement shortly before disposing of the woman he already holds.
Felicity’s parents describe her as reliable and excited about a work presentation. Her absence therefore looks increasingly unlike a voluntary overnight stay.
A Race Takes Shape
The officers begin checking her friends, former boyfriend, and likely route home. The possibility that the killer has already taken her turns an ordinary missing-person inquiry into a race against his established cycle.
The Fake Cab Theory

A Vehicle Based Pattern
Reconsidering the Abductions
The team compares the victims’ last known movements and notices that several could have been approached while travelling home. They consider whether a vehicle let the killer take women without a struggle that witnesses would notice.
The distinction between a pre-booked private hire car and a street-hailed hackney carriage suggests a method: a convincing-looking vehicle could invite a tired stranger inside.
A Targeted Search
Eve assigns officers to review CCTV for vehicles resembling taxis and asks local firms about suspicious activity. The theory gives the inquiry a practical direction, even though no vehicle has yet been identified.
Felicity's Body Found

The Pattern Breaks
A Public Dumping
Felicity’s body is found beneath the lychgate at St Andrew’s Church, Roker, after an early dog walk. The clean clothing and deliberate placement confirm that the killer has returned to his public display of victims.
Felix Carver’s initial examination indicates strangulation. The killer has taken the usual fingertip and also removed the tattoo from Felicity’s hip.
The Clock Tightens
The discovery confirms the team’s fear that the missing woman was in the killer’s hands. Eve now has to find his current captive before the arrival of another replacement triggers another murder.
The Captives Rescued

The Loft Is Found
Evidence Points Home
After Zoe Hardy disappears, the combination of physical evidence, a tip from Josie Trott, and a delivery-van recording brings police to Ken Carlton. In his home, officers find the tunics and the hidden loft cage.
Eve reaches Jill Richards and finds Zoe badly injured. Jill is freed first, while Paul Forrester and Bill Nicol work to release Zoe and summon medical help.
The Confrontation
Ken returns and takes Eve hostage, but she creates an opening and Jill strikes him with a blow lamp. The rescue ends the captivity cycle and puts the killer in custody.
