An Intruder at the Window

Someone Watches Zoe
A Disturbance Outside
While Zoe Hardy is at home, she sees a man watching through the kitchen window after he kicks a flowerpot. He runs when she challenges him, leaving her frightened but unable to identify him.
She reports the intrusion, and Sheila Ormiston finds a clear shoeprint in the garden. The evidence seems useful, although the intruder has already learned that Zoe is alert.
The Target Is Selected
Ken Carlton has observed Zoe and is drawn to her appearance. What seems like a brief episode of snooping is actually the beginning of a planned attack.
A Familiar Delivery

Trust Used Against Her
A Manufactured Excuse
Ken returns to Zoe’s house claiming that a delivery worker forgot to leave complimentary beeswax. He insists that he must demonstrate how to use it, using the worker’s job security to persuade Zoe to let him inside.
Once she turns away to fetch a cloth, he strikes her with the tin. He binds and gags her, hides her in a packing crate, and loads her into the furniture delivery van.
A New Method
The abduction departs from the fake-taxi approach, showing that Ken can adapt when his earlier method is exposed. Zoe’s ordinary trust in a delivery explanation becomes the means of taking her.
Waking Beside Jill

The Loft Revealed
A Captive’s Explanation
Zoe wakes disoriented, with a painful head and her wrists tied near the cage. Jill Richards explains that Ken has kidnapped and raped her and that his previous captives were replaced one by one.
The account reveals the immediate stakes: Ken intends to kill Jill and make Zoe take her place. Jill also explains that the loft is soundproofed, so shouting will not summon help.
Fear Becomes Cooperation
Zoe’s first response is to struggle and call for rescue, but she accepts Jill’s warning when she understands the walls will keep their cries inside. They begin considering how to survive together.
Escape and Injury

A Risk That Backfires
A Sudden Attempt
When Ken prepares to move Zoe, she drops to her knees and tries to send him falling through the loft hatch. He avoids the drop, overpowers her, and beats her until she loses consciousness.
Jill hears the violence and fears that Zoe may be dead. Ken leaves her tied beside the cage and says he wants her alive to suffer, making the danger explicit.
A Dangerous Delay
Zoe’s injuries make her temporarily less attractive to Ken as a captive, and he hesitates to abuse her while the head wound is bandaged. That delay gives police a little more time to find her, though she remains gravely endangered.
Rescue From the Cage

Found Before the Next Murder
Police Reach the Loft
Eve Strong opens the loft hatch and finds Zoe unconscious beside the cage and Jill still restrained inside it. Jill directs the officers to the knots and the padlock, helping them free both women.
Zoe has a weak pulse and needs urgent medical attention. Jill tells Eve that Ken has gone out, but the sound of his return changes the rescue into a fresh confrontation.
Recovery Begins
After Ken is subdued, Zoe is taken to hospital and later remains under medical care. Her survival depends on a chain of discoveries, Jill’s information, and the officers reaching the house before Ken can carry out his threat.
