Jesmond Dene
The CageJesmond Dene is the site of the Briggs twins’ transition from a manipulated online meeting to a physical abduction. Frank McQuillan and Jason Dodds made it part of a false promise: the twins were brought there expecting to meet the young men behind their messages, but found only Dodds waiting. McQuillan later described the choice as deliberate, saying they had selected a quiet area where the girls would have little knowledge of their surroundings.
The promised meeting
The twins’ journey to Jesmond Dene followed an online grooming effort. They had been messaging a person they knew as Mario, who pressed them for pictures and persuaded them to skip school and meet him in Newcastle. In interview, McQuillan admitted that he and Dodds had posed as younger men, using an invented Facebook identity and photographs found on the internet. McQuillan then met the twins near Newcastle station and claimed to be the uncle of one of the young men they had been chatting with, offering to take them to meet him.
From rendezvous to abduction
At Jesmond Dene, McQuillan said he had expected to take pictures of the twins with their tops off. He had intended the situation to make them more willing to do more later. Instead, when they saw that only Dodds was waiting, they were unhappy and tried to leave. The location’s isolation became central to what followed: the twins did not know the area, and McQuillan said that Dodds grabbed one girl while he grabbed the other. They forced the twins back to the car, put them in the back seat and drove them to McQuillan’s home.
Narrative significance
Jesmond Dene marks the point at which the apparent social invitation is revealed as a trap. The messages had brought the twins to Newcastle through persistent requests and a promise to meet the boys whose pictures they had seen; the secluded destination stripped away that fiction. In the account later given to police, the Dene is not incidental scenery but a chosen condition of the crime: a quiet place where the twins’ unfamiliarity with their surroundings helped the men prevent their departure. Its role connects digital grooming to the coercion that followed in person.
