The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial

The Philippines serves as both the objective of the Third Fleet’s advance and the far end of the apparently storm-free stretch of ocean on Willie Keith’s typhoon chart. Its mention links the fleet’s movement toward combat with the weather danger that the chart fails to show.

Operational Setting

After a day and night of gunfire practice while advancing westward, the Third Fleet left the Caine behind with its target in tow and continued toward the airfields of the Philippines. The minesweeper returned to Ulithi while the task force proceeded to strike; the Philippines thus marks the combat destination beyond the Caine’s routine target-towing assignment.

Weather and Foreshadowing

The chart aboard the Caine showed no red squares in the blue space between Ulithi and the Philippines. Willie took the blank chart as evidence that no typhoons lay in those waters and carried on with his chores undisturbed. That conclusion proves dangerously unreliable: the apparent gap on the chart becomes part of the setup for the storm encountered as the ship sails toward the Philippines.
