A Desperate Garrison

A Desperate Garrison
Fort Sky houses a small, underfunded garrison assigned to watch the Deadlands. Its soldiers are poorly equipped, isolated from reinforcement, and aware that a fallen fort may receive no rescue.
Duty Against Probability
Cernit and his men continue because warning fires and defensive posts are their assigned responsibility. Their courage exists within a system that regards them as expendable.
Viviane’s Arrival
Viviane Saint-Lys changes the fort’s calculations. She brings dangerous offensive power, but also uncertainty, because the soldiers cannot yet tell whether she is salvation or another threat.
Benetti’s Confession

Benetti’s Confession
Benetti tells Viviane Saint-Lys that he was sent to the Deadlands after participating in violence against women. He believes the assignment is a punishment and wants to earn back the name he disgraced.
Guilt Made Public
His confession refuses the easy division between honorable defenders and innocent victims. Benetti is both culpable and capable of change, and his self-understanding remains tied to the judgment of others.
A Conditional Redemption
Viviane does not absolve him. She tells him that he already acts like the man he wishes to become, making redemption a continuing practice rather than a completed declaration.
Jor’s Protection

Jor’s Protection
Jor repeatedly protects Viviane Saint-Lys during the first major undead engagements. His actions are nearly wordless, but his positioning makes clear that he considers her survival part of his duty.
Strength Without Display
Jor’s physical power and calm movement contrast with the anxious calculations around him. He does not explain his loyalty; he demonstrates it through immediate action.
A Promise Remembered
When the later siege begins, Jor repeats No leave behind before throwing Viviane toward safety. The phrase becomes his final expression of identity and care.
The Knights’ Last Stand

The Knights’ Last Stand
Cernit, Benetti, and Jor hold the courtyard and ramparts while Viviane Saint-Lys struggles to maintain the defensive line. Their small group faces a mass that should have overwhelmed them long before the final assault.
Formation Under Collapse
Each knight uses his specialized training to compensate for the others. Their formation survives not because the fort is strong, but because every fighter continues filling the gap left by the wounded.
Sacrifice As Tactic
Jor dies saving Viviane, and Benetti later sacrifices himself to draw crawlers away. Their deaths are not abstract heroism; each one buys the seconds required for Viviane and the survivors to reach Solfis.
Cernit’s Survival

Cernit’s Survival
Cernit survives the siege with injuries, grief, and the responsibility of reporting what happened. He organizes the burial of the dead and prepares Viviane Saint-Lys for the next stage of her journey.
Leadership After Victory
The battle saves the fort but destroys the community that made it meaningful. Cernit responds by preserving names, distributing rewards, and ensuring that the survivors receive a route to safety.
A Living Witness
His testimony will establish Viviane’s credibility with the Church of Neriad. Cernit therefore becomes the human bridge between the Deadlands and the institutions beyond them.
