Defiled centipede

The Calamitous Bob

The Defiled centipede is a highly dangerous undead-associated creature encountered at a bridge during a coordinated revenant ambush. Its sudden attack turns Viviane Saint-Lys’s routine caution into an immediate fight for survival, while its destruction provides the first tangible clue that an unseen necromancer is directing the apparently mindless assault.

Appearance and Ambush

The creature is first encountered when Viviane Saint-Lys approaches the bridge and looks downward out of habit. Her caution is practical: bridges may contain improvised explosive devices, and even an explosion that fails to kill a person can send them falling. The danger below is not an explosive, however, but the Defiled centipede itself. Two scythe-like jaws close around her head before she has time to do more than recognize the threat.

The attack is presented through delayed recognition. Viviane Saint-Lys stops time instinctively, sees the jaws converging, and reacts with the soldier reflexes that prevent her from retreating into the closing circle of chitin. She dives low behind cover; the blades snap shut with enough force to make the danger unmistakable. In the rush, one jaw strikes the top of her skull, but the hood of the old cloak protects her. The creature is therefore defined not only by its grotesque anatomy but by the precision and timing of its ambush: it attacks from concealment at the exact point where a bridge inspection leaves its target exposed.

Encounter with Viviane Saint-Lys

Viviane Saint-Lys answers the attack with the Yoink spell. The tendril strikes the Defiled centipede’s head with as much force as she can muster, then penetrates its internal conduits. The assault does not merely damage the creature. It reaches something within it that is not identical with its visible body.

The sensation is compared to hitting a wall with a sledgehammer only for the wall to collapse and reveal someone standing behind it. This image makes the creature’s interior a threshold rather than a sealed organism: its body contains, or has contained, another presence. Viviane Saint-Lys’s torrential power dislodges that presence. The Defiled centipede thus becomes the medium through which an unseen enemy briefly becomes perceptible, even before the enemy is directly seen.

The centipede dies amid ear-splitting screeches. Its death is not an isolated victory. Another centipede rushes up from below the bridge, forcing Viviane Saint-Lys to cast Yoink again. The second creature is smaller and faster, and the first attempt misses. This contrast establishes that the creatures remain dangerous even after one has been understood, because their speed and linear movement give them different tactical profiles.

Combat Function and Control

Benetti intervenes when the second centipede attacks. He pierces its skull with his rapier and jumps back as it attempts to disembowel him. While Benetti creates the opening, Viviane Saint-Lys aims at the base of the creature’s body; the spell reaches its target, and the centipede falls. Its death floods her with energy, linking the creature’s destruction to the immediate replenishment of her magical resources.

The larger tactical significance emerges only after the centipedes have been killed. A mass of revenants charges from the opposite side of the bridge, led by a large crawler. Viviane Saint-Lys is prepared to flee, but Cernit orders the three knights into a battle line in the narrow corridor and shouts a warning about a necromancer. The coordinated behavior of the revenants supplies the decisive interpretation of the centipede encounter: revenants are too unintelligent to organize such an ambush by themselves, so an external controller must be directing them.

The presence felt inside the first Defiled centipede was that controller’s trace. Viviane Saint-Lys realizes that the blow which killed the creature must have caused the enemy caster to lose control. The creature therefore functions as both weapon and conduit. Its body carries the hidden influence of the necromancer, and its death interrupts that influence long enough for the larger pattern of the attack to become visible.

Narrative Significance

The Defiled centipede changes the bridge sequence from a conventional monster attack into an investigation of agency. At first, the threat appears purely physical: jaws, chitin, speed, and the possibility of disembowelment. After Yoink penetrates the creature, the physical danger opens onto an invisible intelligence. The monster is not simply an enemy to be killed; it is evidence that the battlefield is being shaped by someone concealed beyond it.

Its encounter also sharpens the scene’s progression of fear. The bridge first invites ordinary military caution, then produces a sudden animal attack, and finally reveals a coordinated supernatural operation. Each stage revises the previous one. The Defiled centipede’s most important consequence is consequently not its death, but the knowledge released by that death: the revenants are controlled, the ambush has an author, and the enemy’s command can be disrupted through the creatures carrying its presence.
