Imperial Protector

The Calamitous Bob

The Imperial Protector was a once-legendary elite squad of the Old Empire, remembered chiefly through the enchanted skinsuit that survived the cataclysm. Its remnants connect the empire’s exceptional military and magical achievements to the ruined civilization now occupied only by mindless undead, turning an extinct organization into a tangible emblem of imperial grandeur, technological sophistication, and catastrophic collapse.

Identity and Imperial Context

The Imperial Protector belonged to the Old Empire, the vanished power that had made its seat of authority in the western part of Param. That region was once the center from which the empire terrified the wider world, while its elites reached heights of magical ability that no later civilization had matched. The empire’s strength ended at the very apex of its power: the magical catastrophe that destroyed its heartland left behind a vast necrotic scar, a dead imperial landscape, and a civilization whose surviving legacy could be found mainly in private collections and the languages of kings.

The squad’s status as “once-legendary” places it within this larger imperial pattern. The Imperial Protector was not merely an ordinary military unit preserved by chance; its surviving gear is presented as the last material remainder of the squad itself. Its history therefore cannot be separated from the Old Empire’s rise and annihilation. The organization survives in the narrative less as an operating institution than as an archaeological imprint of an imperial order that no longer has living representatives.

Surviving Equipment and Function

The clearest surviving artifact is the Faded skinsuit of the Imperial Protector. The garment was discovered in the ruined imperial city and recognized as the remains of the squad’s former equipment. Most of its enchantments were lost during the cataclysm, but its durability remained intact, along with a minor self-repair function. The contrast is significant: the magical systems that once supported imperial supremacy have largely failed, while the basic material resilience of the uniform continues to function.

The skinsuit also has immediate practical value. It is smooth, retains heat effectively, and can still be worn by Viviane Saint-Lys while exploring the desolate ruins. Its use transforms a relic of imperial authority into survival equipment. The garment’s original institutional meaning has been stripped away, but its physical purpose remains. This survival of utility amid the loss of prestige mirrors the wider fate of the Old Empire, whose former power has vanished while fragments of its craft continue to shape the lives of later people.

The Ruined Capital and the Cataclysm

The Imperial Protector is associated with the ruined seat of the Old Empire, a vast planned city extending for kilometers across a desert of basaltic sand. Estates, temples, churches, and squares still followed the exacting order of imperial urban planning, although they stood dark, dead, and empty. Rubble the size of apartment buildings lay scattered toward distant mountains, suggesting destruction on a scale far beyond an ordinary battle.

The destruction was concentrated at the top of the Imperial Ziggurat. Where the summit had once stood, a gigantic crater opened through the structure, its edges molten and vitrified. The damage appeared more like an asteroid impact or a tactical nuclear strike than conventional military bombardment, yet the devastation had come from inside. That inward origin gives the Imperial Protector’s surviving skinsuit an especially stark historical setting: the squad’s equipment endured the collapse of the empire’s own center, while the center itself was transformed into a wound in the landscape.

The city’s remains establish the scale of the organization’s lost world. The Imperial Protector was part of a civilization capable of rigorous urban planning, immense monumental construction, and extraordinary magical power, but none of those achievements prevented internal destruction. The squad’s relic thus carries both sides of imperial history: mastery over the material world and inability to survive the consequences of its own power.

Military Legacy After the Empire

The organization’s direct chain of command, personnel, and political purpose are no longer present in the surviving evidence. What remains is an image of an elite military formation whose equipment retained exceptional durability after the Old Empire’s fall. Later military forces operate under very different conditions. Baranese knights use blades designed to smash revenants backward without becoming lodged in withered flesh, and their formations depend on disciplined coordination, mounted interception, and controlled exposure to the undead. Their methods are practical responses to the Deadlands rather than expressions of imperial world-conquering power.

This contrast clarifies the Imperial Protector’s historical position. The squad represents a dead center of power, while later knights, church agents, mercenaries, investigators, and fortress garrisons work along the empire’s fractured periphery. The ruins of the Old Empire remain connected to the wider geography of Param, including Baran, Enoria, the Harrakan Heartlands, and the Deadlands, but political authority has been redistributed among successor states, churches, and local military institutions. The Imperial Protector’s relic is therefore a surviving imperial technology without a surviving imperial state.

The continuing presence of undead in the old imperial territory further marks the organization’s failure as a protective force. The region that once served as the empire’s seat is now traversed by mindless undead, and reports of necromancers destroying forts show that the Deadlands remain an active military danger. In this altered environment, protection is no longer guaranteed by an elite imperial squad; it is purchased through church bounties, supplied by mercenary expeditions, and improvised by local defenders.

Historical and Narrative Significance

The Imperial Protector functions as a compressed history of the Old Empire. Its name recalls an institution of elite authority, while its surviving skinsuit is faded, partially depowered, and still repairable. That combination makes the organization’s legacy neither wholly lost nor meaningfully restored. The past remains present as equipment, language, ruins, and military technique, but it cannot reconstitute the order that created it.

Its significance also lies in the tension between appearance and origin. A garment that can help Viviane Saint-Lys endure the heat of the ruins began as part of a legendary imperial squad, yet the narrative places it beside ruined furniture, abandoned buildings, and a crater formed from within the imperial monument. The relic is useful precisely because the empire is gone. The Imperial Protector therefore stands as an emblem of power reduced to salvage: a fragment still capable of protecting a living traveler, but unable to protect the civilization that once gave the fragment its meaning.
