Path Commitment Rule
The Calamitous BobThe Path Commitment Rule is the system’s governing principle for long-term specialization. A path is not merely a job or a temporary skill package: it is a commitment to a concept that empowers body and mind, accelerates acquisition of associated skills, and increases their potency. Because a sentient can hold only one path until that path evolves, choosing one transforms immediate survival into a decision about future capability.
Definition and Operation
The rule presents paths as directed commitments rather than fixed classes. A character may select only one path at a time, and the restriction remains in force until the current path evolves. Evolution can lead toward a more specialized concept, while several paths may also combine into a single later path. The system therefore imposes exclusivity without making the initial choice permanently irreversible: commitment narrows the present route, but development can eventually enlarge or redirect it.
The rule explicitly rejects the idea that one path is universally superior. There are no intrinsically bad paths, provided the choice follows the chooser’s convictions. At the same time, the practical effects are substantial. Paths improve the efficiency of relevant attributes for specific tasks, make associated skills easier to acquire, and function as one of the major power multipliers available to sentient beings. The rule thus joins identity and mechanics: what a character commits to determines not only what can be learned, but how effectively the character can become capable of learning it.
Viviane Saint-Lys’s Selection
Viviane Saint-Lys encounters the available paths while trying to survive a wasteland where monsters, food scarcity, and the absence of water make remaining in place fatal. Her earlier gains in athletics and survival have immediate utility: survival helps her orient herself and identify natural resources, while athletics lets her walk faster and drag the cart for longer without resting. Yet the environment renders ordinary survival expertise painfully inadequate, so the path menu becomes a search for a capability that can alter the terms of survival rather than merely improve endurance.
Most of the choices appear connected either to lightly armed combat or desk work. Alchemist is the only other notably exotic option, but Viviane Saint-Lys has found no herbs during the preceding week. She therefore follows the path of Black Hedge Witch. The selection is practical rather than ornamental. Although the title evokes an imagined cat and hat, the system identifies it as one of the lowest dedicated spellcaster paths for exploring black mana, with Black Apprentice as the nearest comparison. Black Apprentice depends more heavily on book study; Black Hedge Witch instead relies on meditation and spoken guidance, making it better suited to her circumstances.
Benefits and Constraints
Black Hedge Witch gives mental attributes an average efficiency multiplier of 1.2 when Viviane Saint-Lys casts black-aligned spells, while also improving relevant skill acquisition. The path is consequently valuable in the wasteland not because it makes her a complete mage immediately, but because it lets her cast more often and delays the extent of mana poisoning. Its benefit is measured against a specific danger: access to black mana provides power, but repeated use carries a poisoning cost, and the path modifies the rate at which that cost becomes debilitating rather than abolishing it.
The path’s low position among dedicated black-mana spellcaster routes also clarifies its role in progression. It is an entry point, not a final identity. The system promises that Viviane Saint-Lys will be able to upgrade it later, preserving a developmental arc in which an initially improvised survival choice can become a more specialized magical vocation. Her recorded status later lists Black Hedge Witch at level four, alongside Beginner 5 Mana manipulation, indicating that the commitment has already begun to organize measurable advancement.
Agency, Dependence, and Consequences
The rule gives Viviane Saint-Lys a form of agency under extreme pressure. She cannot remain safely uncommitted: survival requires movement, training, and a capability capable of opening paths out of the Deadlands. Choosing Black Hedge Witch therefore converts uncertainty into a controlled direction. It also creates a durable question about return. She wonders whether the benefits of the path would remain if she returned to Earth, then corrects the conditional thought into confidence that she will return. The path becomes part of the imagined bridge between her current existence and the world she left behind.
That agency is never wholly independent. Solfis has influenced Viviane Saint-Lys’s decisions since their first meeting, and she recognizes that he continues to shape her according to his judgment. She permits that influence because Solfis has saved her life several times, because their fates are tied, and because she believes survival and an eventual return to Earth will come through her own actions. Training for months appears worth the effort even though she distrusts the possibility that powerful archmages would accept her story without demanding payment. Her attraction to magic and to the feeling of power is acknowledged as part of the decision, but it operates within the larger logic established by the Path Commitment Rule: conviction, survival, and ambition converge in a single binding choice.
The same logic later informs her broader plan. Magic is one of the means by which she expects to open the doors she needs, alongside intelligent networking; being powerful, respected, and dangerous is also valuable in itself. She concludes that she must identify the reasonably available people or places capable of helping her and create an actionable plan for reaching them, while continuing to train. The Path Commitment Rule gives this objective a durable technical foundation: Black Hedge Witch is not simply what Viviane Saint-Lys can do now, but the route through which present training is meant to produce future leverage.
