Eastward Departure

A Venture Beyond Routes
Thornton, Hans, Pete, Buck, and other dogs travel eastward from Dawson in search of the Lost Cabin.
Risk without Urgency
They carry tools, ammunition, and limited food, relying on hunting rather than schedules. The journey is exploratory rather than commercial in the ordinary sense.
Buck’s Delight
For Buck, fishing, hunting, rafting, and wandering offer a freedom unlike the repetitive mail trail. Work and wilderness begin to coexist on his own terms.
Vanished Human Traces

Evidence without Explanation
The party finds an ancient blazed path and a ruined hunting lodge but no living guide to the Lost Cabin.
History as Mystery
The flintlock, blankets, and abandoned trail suggest earlier travelers who disappeared into the same vastness.
The Wilderness Unresolved
The search does not turn nature into a solved map. It preserves uncertainty, making the expedition valuable for the freedom of movement it enables rather than for a promised answer.
The Gold Valley

Discovery without the Cabin
The travelers find a shallow placer where gold lies across the bottom of their washing pans.
Abundance Found
They abandon the search for the Lost Cabin and work the valley, filling moosehide bags with dust and nuggets.
Freedom Financed
The discovery gives Thornton and his partners the material means to wander and hunt without immediate economic pressure. Buck’s final wilderness life unfolds beside wealth that humans cannot take with them into the forest.
