“We are Kinder Garten. Ten thousand men with one name.”
The Changeling“We are Kinder Garten. Ten thousand men with one name.” The caged man’s reply to Apollo Kagwa turns a name Apollo has treated as an individual identity into a claim of collective identity: the speaker insists that Kinder Garten is not simply one man, but ten thousand men sharing one name.
A Name Claimed by Many
Apollo says, “You’re Kinder Garten,” addressing the man in the cage as a single person. The man answers, “We!” before declaring that ten thousand men bear the name. His correction makes the distinction itself the point: Apollo names an individual, while the speaker insists on a plurality that cannot be contained by that singular address.
The Exchange in the Cage
The declaration comes after the man shouts “Boiled vegetables!” and brings his face to the mesh barrier. He thrusts his fingertips through it; in the moonlight, Apollo sees nails as ragged as claws. Apollo feels confused, “like a capsized ship,” and then accuses him of killing his daughter, citing Gretta Wheeler. The collective claim thus arrives in a confrontation where the man’s identity, his apparent physical strangeness, and the accusation against him press together, without resolving what the ten thousand men signify beyond his own assertion.
