Amsterdam
The ChangelingAmsterdam matters in the novel as the city where a private episode in Emma Valentine’s life becomes part of a public art collection. A Dutch photographer developed the film after returning there, and a photograph of Emma was selected for exhibition.
The Photograph in Amsterdam
Nichelle Murray tells Apollo Kagwa that an image of Emma is displayed in an Amsterdam gallery. She explains that the photographer did not develop the film until returning to the city, where the image was judged worth keeping and framing. The gallery owner bought it and left it on display.
Public Display and Private Knowledge
The photograph’s presence in the gallery gives the city a particular significance: an experience Emma had not disclosed to the photographer became an image that circulated beyond her control. Nichelle says Emma showed her a JPEG of the photograph, and believes the gallery owner included it in the gallery’s catalogs. Amsterdam is therefore both the place where the image was developed and the setting for its continuing exhibition, while Apollo learns of its existence through Nichelle’s account.
