John F. Kennedy International Airport

The Changeling

John F. Kennedy International Airport becomes the meeting place where Emma Valentine returns from Brazil and discovers that Apollo Kagwa has kept his promise to meet her. Its international arrivals terminal, crowded through a night of delays and opened to dawn by broad windows, turns a routine airport pickup into a test of whether their connection has endured her year away.

Setting and Role

The relevant setting is the airport’s international arrivals area. Friends and families wait there for delayed passengers, slumping, shuffling, and shrugging as the hours pass; some of the waiting people argue. The terminal is not merely a backdrop to Emma’s return: its long overnight wait makes Apollo’s presence a visible answer to her uncertainty about whether he will still want to see her.

A Night of Delays

Emma had told Apollo that her flight would arrive late at night and invited him to meet her if he wanted to. The plane was expected at ten o’clock, but it was delayed twice. Apollo remained at the airport through the night, among the other passengers’ families and friends, and fell asleep sometime after midnight. As other delayed flights arrived, their tired passengers emerged to meet loved ones who were similarly worn down by waiting.

Emma’s Arrival

Dawn light entered through the terminal’s grand windows when Emma’s plane finally landed. She had returned after a year away in Brazil, carrying a backpack rather than the suitcase she had taken with her. Emma saw Apollo before he saw her. When he took her pack, she asked if he had stayed; her eyes grew wet and trembled, and she repeated the question quietly. The airport’s long wait thus ends not with a formal explanation of their separation, but with the concrete fact of Apollo still being there to welcome her.
