1502
The Constant PrincessIn January 1502, Catalina and Arthur, Prince of Wales, reached Ludlow Castle in a procession that made their arrival a public event. The scene places the royal couple within Ludlow’s stone-walled town and gives the welcome of its inhabitants a vivid, local presence.
Arrival in Winter
A low red winter sun hung over the rounded hills as the procession rattled through the great gate in the stone wall around Ludlow. Arthur rode beside Catalina’s litter and called out that they had at last reached Ludlow. Ahead, men-at-arms announced the Prince of Wales and cleared the way as doors opened and townspeople came out to watch.
The Town’s Welcome
Catalina saw a busy town of timbered upper stories overhanging cobbled streets, with shops and working yards below. Shopkeepers’ wives rose from stools outside their shops to wave, and Catalina waved back. From the upper floors, glovers’ girls, shoemakers’ apprentices, goldsmiths’ boys, and spinsters leaned out and called her name. She laughed and caught her breath when one boy seemed about to topple from his perch before his companions pulled him safely back.
The Moment’s Significance
The arrival is presented through Catalina’s encounter with the town: the formal announcement of Arthur’s rank gives way to a reciprocal exchange of greetings. The stone gate and armed procession mark the couple’s royal status, while the shopfronts, workshops, and watching residents make Ludlow feel like a lived-in community rather than a mere destination. In this brief public welcome, Catalina is not only carried into the town; she answers its people directly, smiling and waving as they call her name.
