Garallosco de la Vega

The Constant Princess

Garallosco de la Vega is Isabella of Castile’s champion, called upon to answer Yarfe’s challenge on behalf of Hernando Pérez del Pulgar. His duel with the much larger Moorish fighter places him at the center of a crisis witnessed by the queen and her daughters, including Catalina of Aragon; the outcome turns on a desperate, concealed counterstroke rather than strength alone.

Role and Challenge

When the royal party faces danger, Isabella declares that her champion will answer Yarfe for Hernando. De la Vega rides to the little house where the royal guards have gathered and asks the queen’s permission to meet the challenge. Isabella grants it, sending him to go with God. From the roof, Catalina fears that Yarfe’s greater size will decide the encounter and urges her mother to stop de la Vega from going.

The Duel

The two fighters charge on horseback and collide with such force that both are thrown from their saddles. The encounter is more dangerous than the courtly jousts Catalina knows: the lances break, and the contest continues on foot with swords. Yarfe gains the advantage through his greater strength, pressing de la Vega down and seeming close to victory. De la Vega then uses a short dagger hidden in his left hand to counterattack. Yarfe falls back, retrieves neither victory nor the field, and staggers toward his own men, admitting that he is lost and that they have lost.

Significance

De la Vega’s victory answers the immediate challenge and shifts the spectators’ attention from Catalina’s fear for her champion to the danger of the larger conflict: at a signal, the gates of the red fort open and soldiers begin to emerge. The episode presents him as a capable and determined fighter whose success depends on resolve and resourcefulness against a physically stronger opponent. The account establishes him through this act of service to Isabella and the cause she names, without supplying further details about his life or later fate.
