Dominican Republic

The Day of the Jackal

The Dominican Republic is a pivotal location in the novel’s search for a professional assassin: the account of Rafael Trujillo’s killing there supplies a possible precedent for the long-range rifle work under investigation, while the competing stories about Charles Harold Calthrop leave the supposed connection unresolved.

The Assassination and the Arms Dealer

The assassination took place on a lonely road outside Ciudad Trujillo. According to a report recounted by a British intelligence officer, partisans stopped Trujillo’s armoured car and a marksman fired from about 150 yards at the speeding vehicle. The bullet passed through the small, unarmoured triangular window on the driver’s side, struck the driver in the throat, and caused the car to crash. The partisans then closed in and killed Trujillo. A rumor identified the shooter as an Englishman, making the episode relevant to the hunt for a skilled foreign assassin, but the account remained hearsay rather than a confirmed identification.

Charles Harold Calthrop had been sent to Ciudad Trujillo in December 1960 or January 1961 by a British arms company, which hoped to sell surplus submachine guns to Trujillo’s police chief. The timing placed him on the island near the assassination, but his reported reason for leaving was consistent with the upheaval that followed: he said he was discussing the sale with the police chief when news arrived that Trujillo had been killed. The chief hurried away to his private estate, where an aircraft and pilot were waiting; as mobs began seeking supporters of the old regime, Calthrop bribed a fisherman to take him off the island.

The evidence points in opposing directions. Calthrop’s account made practical sense, and his quick departure did not corroborate the later rumor that he had taken part in the killing. Yet his former employer said he had been dismissed over doubts about his loyalty in the competitive second-hand arms trade, and that he knew little about rifles when first hired. Those details left open the possibility that he had served the revolutionaries as well as his company, but they did not establish that he was the marksman—or explain how a relative newcomer to rifle shooting could have made the reported shot.

How the Rumor Reached London

The Dominican Republic entered the investigation through a report passed along by a British Secret Intelligence Service officer, not through a confirmed identification of the shooter. The officer had been transferred from Beirut to the Caribbean after a security breach prompted changes within the Service; he later returned to London and shared an office with a colleague before being redeployed. In that setting he mentioned the rumor linking an English rifleman to Trujillo’s assassination. Its path from Caribbean hearsay into a London conversation helps explain why the account could guide inquiries into Calthrop without resolving whether he had actually taken part.

The Lead Turns Back to Calthrop

The Dominican Republic episode left the investigators with suspicion but no identification: Thomas could neither make the rumor fit the surviving account nor rule out that Calthrop had played a double game. The inquiry therefore shifted from reconstructing the killing to locating its possible witness or participant. A neighbor reported that Calthrop had left his address several days earlier, saying he was going touring in Scotland; she had noticed what looked like fishing rods in the back of his parked car. The Caribbean lead thus ended not in a verdict about Trujillo’s assassin, but in a fresh uncertainty about where Calthrop had gone.

A Geographic Lead, Not an Identification

The Dominican Republic matters less as a destination in the present manhunt than as the setting of a disputed earlier operation. Its road, armoured car, and exposed window give the rumor a precise physical shape, but precision of detail cannot establish who fired the shot. The location anchors an investigative hypothesis while leaving its central question open: whether Calthrop’s documented presence on the island connected him to the killing at all.
