Client List
The Death of Bunny MunroThe Client List is the practical instrument of Bunny and Bunny Junior’s travelling beauty-sales business, but its final appearance turns it into something more than a record of customers. Bunny relies on it to keep the trip moving; Bunny Junior ends its usefulness by destroying and swallowing it, a decisive act of refusal that gives the list a personal consequence beyond its commercial purpose.
Role in the Sales Routine
At breakfast in the Queensbury Hotel, Bunny Junior pulls out the Client List and asks his father where they are going next. Bunny says they will visit a loyal customer in Rottingdean, someone they can approach again because she loves the body cream. In this moment the list connects the boy’s practical wish to leave with Bunny’s habit of treating customers as repeatable sales opportunities. It helps organize the journey even as Bunny’s restless behavior makes the routine seem unstable.
Bunny’s Reliance on the List
Later, after the Punto has failed to start and then coughed back into life, Bunny rests his head on the steering wheel, plays with the hole in his trousers, and tells Bunny Junior to grab the Client List. The request keeps the document within the ordinary vocabulary of work even as Bunny is visibly worn down. The list remains something he expects his son to fetch and carry, a small but concrete sign of how the sales trip depends on the boy’s participation.
Destruction and Significance
When Bunny goes to a black-painted door and introduces himself as a representative of Eternity Enterprises, Bunny Junior remains in the Punto with the list beside him. He picks it up, tears it carefully into strips, puts each piece in his mouth, and swallows the whole document. He thinks this puts an end to that. The deliberate, methodical destruction reverses the list’s earlier function: instead of guiding the next customer visit, it is removed from circulation altogether. Its fate marks Bunny Junior’s rejection of the sales routine at the very moment his father continues to perform it.
