Grayson Court
The Death of Bunny MunroGrayson Court is the residential complex in Portslade where Bunny Munro and Libby Munro live. Bunny’s return there becomes a decisive threshold in the novel: an ordinary homecoming, shaped by his expectation of seeing his wife, ends with the discovery that she has died by suicide.
Setting and Approach
Bunny drives to Grayson Court from nearby traffic after hearing Kylie Minogue on the radio. The journey takes ten minutes. He turns into the forecourt, parks the Punto, and crosses the courtyard carrying his sample case and jacket. These details establish the complex as part of his everyday route and the flat as the destination toward which he directs his attention.
The Entrance and a Memory
On the way to the door, Bunny searches his pocket for his key. The door is painted the same canary yellow as his shirt, and its color briefly recalls an image from ten years earlier: Libby crouched beside it in jeans and yellow Marigolds, painting and smiling up at him. The memory gives the entrance a history of shared domestic life, making the threshold more than a simple point of arrival.
Discovery and Significance
Inside, Bunny finds Libby dead by the security grille, still wearing her orange nightdress. The discovery abruptly overturns the hopeful tone of his return: moments before, he had been smiling and imagining that she might welcome his advances. Grayson Court becomes the place where an ordinary expectation of reunion collides with irreversible loss, introducing the bereavement that shapes Bunny’s subsequent journey.
