The Queensbury Hotel, in Regency Square, serves as a temporary refuge during Bunny and Bunny Junior’s sales journey, but not a restorative one. In its guest room and breakfast room, Bunny’s increasingly unsettled behavior becomes visible to his son; the hotel’s television, meanwhile, redirects their attention toward Butlins Holiday Camp, Bognor Regis.

Setting and Appearance

Bunny lies in his room in zebra-striped briefs, drinking Scotch and watching a small television. The room’s psychedelic wallpaper, blood-colored paisley carpet, scarlet curtains, and paper shade decorated with dragons make the lodging feel garish and oppressive. Practical comforts are absent too: there is no room service and no mini-bar. Bunny has a nosebleed and uses tissues to stem it, adding a physical sign of his deterioration to the scene.

Scenes During the Stay

The hotel’s breakfast room is recalled through Bunny Junior’s account of his father’s erratic conduct. Bunny repeatedly gets up to use his phone, spills coffee, remains in the bathroom for a long time, and follows a waitress while speaking rapidly. His son eats quickly, eager to leave, and consults the client list to ask where they are going next. Bunny says they will visit a loyal customer in Rottingdean, whose enthusiasm for the body cream makes her a dependable sales prospect.

Television and Narrative Significance

In the guest room, a sudden burst of music draws Bunny and his son to an advertisement for Butlins Holiday Camp, Bognor Regis. The sequence presents the camp through images of its attractions—including the Tiki Bar, the Empress Ballroom, swimming pools, a monorail, and a giant fibreglass rabbit—alongside smiling staff and holidaymakers. The hotel thus frames two contrasting forms of refuge: the uncomfortable room where father and son confront Bunny’s agitation, and the bright holiday world offered by the advertisement. The Queensbury is significant less as a destination in itself than as a brief stop where Bunny Junior’s worry is sharpened and the journey’s next direction is established.
