The Decameron’s Daily Story-Theme Rule, Including the Ninth-Day Exception

The Decameron

The Decameron’s Daily Story-Theme Rule, Including the Ninth-Day Exception gives the storytelling company a shared subject for each day while leaving room for a deliberate break in the pattern. Its clearest test comes on the Ninth Day, when Emilia releases the storytellers from a fixed theme; the following day, Pamfilo resumes the customary ordinance and sets a subject meant to encourage generous conduct and lasting renown.

The rule and its place in the gathering

The company’s storytelling is organized under successive rulers, who guide the proceedings and call upon members to speak. After Pamfilo’s story on the First Day, the queen directs Neifile to continue the established diversion. Later, when Lauretta’s period of rule ends, she passes the crown to Emilia; at the close of Emilia’s day, Emilia in turn yields it to Pamfilo. These changes of ruler frame the daily proceedings, including decisions about what the company will tell.

The rule is presented as a customary constraint rather than an incidental preference. Emilia describes the preceding days as having been spent under a fixed law of discourse. Pamfilo likewise characterizes the return to a common subject as a return to the company’s accustomed ordinance. Together, these moments establish a recurring structure: the day’s ruler sets the terms, and the storytellers take their turns within them.

Emilia’s release from the fixed subject

As the Ninth Day’s ruler, Emilia chooses not to impose a special subject for the stories to be told the next day. She compares the company to oxen that, after laboring beneath a yoke, are loosed to pasture freely. In the same way, she argues, a period of wandering from the familiar constraint will restore the company’s strength before it takes up the yoke again. Her image makes the exception part of the rule’s design: rest is not a rejection of order, but a respite that prepares the group to return to it.

Emilia also contrasts the variety of a leafy garden, filled with different plants, with a grove containing only oaks. The choice of unrestricted subjects, she suggests, can entertain through variety just as effectively as a day devoted to one topic. She accordingly frees each storyteller to speak of whatever pleases them, leaving the next ruler to decide whether to reinstate the customary limits. The company approves her judgment and spends the remaining hours in different pastimes: the women weave garlands and play, while the young men game and sing. The formal break in the story theme thus accompanies a broader release from the day’s structured discourse, though the company’s shared social routine continues.

Pamfilo restores the ordinance

At the end of Emilia’s day, Lauretta gives the crown to Pamfilo, the last member of the company still to receive it. Pamfilo acknowledges Emilia’s permission for unrestricted storytelling, but declares that the company has now rested and should return to its accustomed arrangement. For the following day, he assigns a subject encompassing anyone who has acted generously or magnificently in love or in other matters.

The announced theme gives the final day a deliberate direction without narrowing it to love alone. Pamfilo says that hearing and recounting such deeds should kindle the company’s desire to act worthily, so that the brevity of mortal life may be answered by enduring praise. The theme therefore serves both as a subject for stories and as an exhortation: exemplary actions are to be remembered, and the telling of them is meant to encourage further worthy conduct. Under Pamfilo’s rule, Neifile is called upon to give the first discourse of the day.

Function and significance

The Ninth-Day exception shows that the daily subjects are a flexible framework, not an inflexible demand maintained at every turn. Emilia explicitly links freedom from the theme to the need for renewal, while Pamfilo’s announcement makes the return to a common subject a conscious restoration rather than an automatic continuation. The sequence distinguishes a temporary suspension from an abandonment of the practice.

The rule also connects the company’s internal governance with the form of the storytelling itself. A ruler’s choice shapes what kinds of tales can be heard together; the Ninth Day opens the field to variety, and the final day gathers attention around generosity and magnificence. In this way, the changing themes give the collection both a rhythm of constraint and release and a means of directing the company’s attention toward particular kinds of human conduct.
