Torrenieri
The DecameronTorrenieri is the intended next stop in the episode of Cecco Fortarrigo and Cecco Angiolieri: Fortarrigo invokes the prospect of reaching it that evening to keep Angiolieri from leaving Buonconvento. The narrative names the destination but does not depict the travelers arriving there.
A Destination Used in an Argument
After losing his own clothes and Angiolieri’s money at play, Fortarrigo returns to the inn while Angiolieri is preparing to leave. He presses him to redeem a doublet pawned for thirty-five shillings rather than wait until the lender demands thirty-eight, presenting the difference as a reason to stay. When Angiolieri rejects the appeal and threatens punishment, Fortarrigo persists, arguing that they still have time to reach Torrenieri before evening.
Narrative Significance
Torrenieri gives Fortarrigo’s delay a concrete itinerary and deadline. His reference to the journey makes his plea sound practical even as Angiolieri recognizes that Fortarrigo has robbed him and is obstructing his departure. The place therefore functions in the scene as the promised destination of a journey, not as a setting in which any later action is shown.
