Five Brothers
The Devil All the TimeFive Brothers is a healing powder represented in the novel through its packet and the contrasting beliefs attached to it: Reverend Albert Sykes treats it as something worth passing on, while Preston Teagardin rejects its healing claim.
Appearance and Intended Use
At the Coal Creek Church of the Holy Ghost Sanctified, the seriously ill Reverend Albert Sykes announces that he is stepping down temporarily and that his nephew will arrive with his wife in about two weeks to help. During the announcement, Sykes takes an empty Five Brothers pack from his pocket, holds it up, and says he will hand it over to his nephew. The gesture gives the small packet a practical place in the handover, though the evidence records Sykes’s intention to pass it on, not that the transfer occurs.
Belief and Skepticism
Sykes presents Five Brothers as having the power to heal, but Preston Teagardin regards that claim with contempt and nearly laughs when his uncle tells him about it. The packet therefore carries no settled authority: for Sykes it is associated with hoped-for healing and an act of provision, while Preston refuses the belief invested in it. The contrast leaves the powder’s efficacy unconfirmed and makes the object a measure of the different attitudes its claim elicits.
