U.S. Route 35

The Devil All the Time

U.S. Route 35 links two turning points in Arvin Eugene Russell’s journey: his passage toward Point Pleasant after leaving his old home, and the ride with Carl Henderson and Sandy Henderson that takes him away from the highway toward danger. The road first offers a way forward through a series of chance lifts; later, it becomes the edge of a deliberate trap.

Route and Setting

After selling Arvin’s 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air, Arvin Eugene Russell walks to the highway and catches a ride through Charleston with a fertilizer salesman. The salesman lets him off on U.S. Route 35 at Nitro. A second lift, in a pickup carrying baskets of produce, takes him to the edge of Point Pleasant, from where he walks toward the bridge. A bank clock reads 5:47 as he nears the Ohio River. The sequence presents the highway as part of a hurried, improvised passage across Ohio, made possible by strangers willing to stop.

The Ride with Carl and Sandy

Arvin’s next important encounter begins when Carl and Sandy pick him up in their station wagon. They say they are from Fort Wayne and have been vacationing in Florida. As they travel on U.S. Route 35, Carl watches the time and the landscape. Near the Ross County line, he decides that he will kill a man in Ohio that evening, despite having avoided breaking his major rules before. He tells Sandy to turn off the highway, using a supposed need to stop as his pretext.

From Highway to Isolation

Sandy turns from U.S. Route 35 onto a dirt-and-gravel road and drives past a farm at the corner. Carl directs her to continue. Arvin notices that they have passed no other house, adjusts the Luger pressing against him, and wonders whether anyone has found Preston Teagardin’s body. The change from a public highway to an isolated road sharpens the scene’s danger: the ride that had carried Arvin toward his destination has brought him into a place chosen by Carl for a planned attack.
