.408 CheyTac sniper rifle

The Dog Stars

The .408 CheyTac sniper rifle is Bangley’s powerful, portable precision weapon, used to cover Hig in the open country around their airport refuge and incorporated into the long-range defenses they build together. It gives their partnership a formidable reach, but its use against a girl pursuing Hig also makes the rifle a focus for questions about the violence behind their security.

Design and Purpose

Bangley describes the rifle as light for a weapon of its power and suited to being carried on foot while remaining capable of striking a person at a distance of about a mile. He has a rangefinder and claims to have made such a shot; Hig has seen him shoot people from far away more than once. The weapon’s mobility matters in a landscape where Hig travels exposed ground on foot, sometimes hauling a sled loaded with game, while Bangley provides cover from a distance.

The Rifle and the Tower

Bangley and Hig construct a tower four miles out on the plain, designed not for air traffic but for killing. Bangley’s preparations reflect the rifle’s specialized use: he fits the top platform with a bench rest and locking swivel, and provides separate mounts for a spotting scope and laser rangefinder. The rifle, scope, and rangefinder are not left there, however. A windspeed-and-direction indicator remains on its own pole, while Bangley’s ballistic tables are kept in a drawer Hig makes for him. Together, these details show a defensive system built around careful attention to distance, aim, and changing conditions, rather than a weapon simply stored at a fixed post.

Use and Consequences

Bangley’s preferred range is fourteen hundred yards, a distance he considers close enough to make a kill likely with his skill. The tower and rifle allow him to cover Hig as he crosses exposed ground; on a hunting trip, Bangley watches over him from partway along the route. The same capacity for distant protection also brings lethal consequences. The previous summer, Bangley shoots a girl who is chasing Hig across the plain. Hig returns to her and later asks Bangley why he did it. The episode places the rifle’s effectiveness beside the human cost of using it, without resolving the moral question for Hig.

Significance

The .408 CheyTac sniper rifle is both a practical instrument in the men’s survival arrangement and a measure of Bangley’s approach to danger: threats are managed through preparation, distance, and decisive force. Hig depends on the protection the weapon affords, yet the shooting of the girl unsettles any simple equation between defense and safety. The rifle’s presence therefore marks the tension within their shared refuge: the same reach that can guard a companion can also make killing part of the system that keeps them alive.
