Belvoir St Theatre

The Drover's Wife

Belvoir St Theatre is the theatre where the play that initiated the development of The Drover’s Wife was written and staged. Its role in the work’s history is concrete: support for the script led to a 2016 production, whose success opened the way for the story’s expansion into a novel and a feature film.

Role in the Story’s Development

The play began with a script written in 2014 for Belvoir St Theatre, with support from the Balnaves Foundation and the Balnaves Fellowship. The theatre thus marks the story’s first identified theatrical home and the institutional context in which its initial dramatic form took shape. The later novel and film grew from this beginning, but were not simply identical versions of the play.

Production and Reception

The production opened in late 2016 for a limited season that sold out all thirty-three performances. In 2017 it won a dozen or more awards. These milestones record a swift movement from a supported writing project to a production with a substantial, though bounded, public run and significant recognition.

From Stage to Novel and Film

The success of the play helped the writer secure a book deal with Penguin Random House and approval to make a feature film. The three forms share a story, while the novel follows a structure similar to the film and gives greater room to the characters’ backstories and development. It also allows access to their inner thoughts, an element the writer described as a challenge when moving from scriptwriting to prose fiction.

Belvoir St Theatre’s significance therefore lies in its place at the beginning of a cross-medium trajectory: a supported script became a sold-out stage production, whose reception enabled further versions of the story. The theatre is associated with the work’s origin, while the later novel and film extend its characters and narrative beyond the limits of the initial production.
