Penguin Random House

The Drover's Wife

Penguin Random House is the publisher associated with the novel of Molly Johnson’s story. The book deal followed the stage play’s success, making the organization a key link in the work’s progression from theatre into a form that could deepen its characters’ histories and inner lives.

Role in the Story’s Publication

The author traces the novel’s opportunity directly to a play written for Belvoir St Theatre. Supported by the Balnaves Foundation and the Balnaves Fellowship in 2014, the play opened in late 2016 for a limited, sold-out run of thirty-three performances. After the production won a dozen or more awards in 2017, the author secured a book deal with Penguin Random House, alongside approval to develop a feature film. The publisher’s place in this sequence is therefore part of a broader expansion of the story, rather than an isolated publication detail.

The Novel and Its Adaptations

The author distinguishes the novel from the theatre and film versions even though the novel follows a structure similar to the film. Prose made room for character backstories and a greater depth of development, including access to characters’ inner thoughts. That difference mattered to the author’s process: translating interior thought into the novel initially felt difficult after earlier screenwriting guidance had discouraged characters from speaking to themselves. Penguin Random House’s book deal enabled the story to take a form in which that inward dimension could be explored.

Significance

The novel’s publication marks a shift in how the story could be told. The stage production established its public success; the book could then build on the shared narrative structure while developing histories and interiority unavailable in the same way across the other genres. Penguin Random House thus stands at the point where the play’s reception opened a further literary life for the work.
