A Funeral Return

A Funeral Return
The summons
Aaron Falk comes back to Kiewarra for Luke Hadler’s funeral after receiving a blunt letter from Gerry Hadler. Its accusation about an old lie turns the homecoming into something more than a bereavement visit.
A settled verdict
The town treats the deaths of Luke, Karen Hadler, and Billy Hadler as a completed murder-suicide. Falk arrives with no official role, yet Gerry’s demand and the memorial photographs place him inside the family’s painful history.
A Local Partnership

A Local Partnership
Doubts take shape
Greg Raco shows Falk the crime scene and describes details that trouble him: ammunition inconsistent with the farm’s stock, Karen’s position at the door, and the apparent search of Billy’s room.
An unofficial inquiry
Falk agrees to examine the family’s financial records while Raco shares what he has found. Their partnership is informal and uneasy, but both want to know whether the obvious account of the killings is wrong.
The Unsettling Evidence

The Unsettling Evidence
Signs of staging
The fingerprint impressions on Luke Hadler’s shotgun look unusually clear, and four marks in the truck bed suggest that something had shifted beside his body. Raco also points out that the family’s baby was left alive.
A wider possibility
None of these details proves that another person killed the family. Together, however, they prevent Falk from accepting the murder-suicide as settled and give the inquiry a direction beyond Luke’s character.
The Farmhouse Recording

The Farmhouse Recording
The truck returns
Security footage from Hadler Farm shows Luke’s silver pickup arriving on the afternoon of the killings. Two muffled shots follow before the vehicle leaves again, making the recorded timeline appear to support the original conclusion.
The driver remains unknown
The camera records a vehicle, not its occupant. Falk and Raco must therefore distinguish what the footage establishes from what it merely seems to establish; the central question is still who drove Luke’s truck.
The Culprit Revealed

The Culprit Revealed
A different motive
Falk connects the school grant, the principal’s concealed gambling, and the unexplained tire marks in Luke’s truck. Scott Whitlam used the truck and a hidden bicycle to stage the apparent sequence of events.
The case resolves
Whitlam confesses through his actions and is captured after threatening to ignite the dry bushland. The killings were not Luke’s desperate act but an attempt to stop Karen from exposing Whitlam’s theft.
