Athlone

The Edge of the World

Athlone is identified as the midway point between Dublin and Galway. The bus stops there during the band’s journey, making the town a brief waypoint rather than the focus of a separate excursion.

Route and Setting

From the front of the bus, Shay peers out at Athlone’s windows. The scene establishes the stop’s position along the route, between the departure point of Dublin and the destination of Galway, while keeping the action inside the bus.

The Stop and Its Narrative Role

Corina nudges Shay hard in the ribs and tells him that sightseeing would have required going to bed earlier; there are things to do, and he is to sit down. He considers muttering an insult but holds back under the weight of her glare. Athlone thus becomes the setting for a small but telling clash between Shay’s wish to look around and Corina’s insistence on keeping the band to her meticulous schedule. The exchange also reflects her practical authority as manager: Shay recognizes that, for all her impatience, she has helped the band move beyond playing workingmen’s clubs.
