Galway

The Edge of the World

Galway serves as both a point of entry into the Smuggler’s Beat tour and the setting for a private encounter beside the River Corrib. The city connects the tour’s practical demands with a more personal threshold: here Ollie joins the journey, and Shay Maloney asks for time before the documentary begins so he can speak to his father.

Arrival and the Tour

Ollie reaches Galway by train after abandoning his hire car. The change eases his frayed nerves, though he still dreads spending a month confined to the Smuggler’s Beat tour bus. His consolation is the band’s evident talent; the prospect of an interminable work trip would be worse if the music were poor. Galway thus marks the beginning of a demanding stretch of travel, even before the bus pulls into the car park and Shay Maloney arrives.

The River Corrib Encounter

Outside the venue, Shay Maloney stands alone beneath a tree, looking over the River Corrib. Ollie pauses, uncertain whether to approach a man who seems not to want company, then lights a cigarette and moves closer. The click of his lighter catches Shay Maloney’s attention; after an unreadable look, Shay Maloney signals for Ollie to join him. The riverside setting gives their meeting a quiet, suspended quality, apart from the arriving tour and its obligations.

A Pause Before the Documentary

In Galway, the conversation turns to the documentary that is to accompany the tour. Shay Maloney explains that he has signed the contract, despite feeling that the researcher’s interest in him is tied to his being adopted and to the appeal of that history. He asks to delay the start until he can speak to his father, because beginning an inquiry into his origins without telling him feels wrong. Ollie agrees. As they part, Ollie lays a hand on Shay Maloney’s shoulder, leaves it there for a second, then withdraws it. Galway is therefore not merely a tour stop: it is where the project’s public timetable meets Shay Maloney’s need to approach family history on his own terms.
