Leeds

The Edge of the World

Leeds becomes a place of reunion and revelation for Shay and Ollie. It is where they expect to meet after a brief separation, and where a graveyard encounter brings Shay face to face with a hidden part of his parentage. The city’s role in the story also reaches back through his family: both of his grandparents’ sons eventually settled there after leaving London.

The Promised Reunion

While Shay is in London, Ollie explains that he cannot be with him there but is arranging Shay’s final film and promises to be in Leeds. Ollie also says he needs to bring something to an end before they can move forward. Shay accepts the delay: Leeds is close, and, after waiting his whole life to meet Ollie, he believes he can wait two more days. His decision gives the city the shape of a near-future meeting point, charged with the promise of being together again.

A Graveyard Revelation

In Leeds, Ollie takes Shay to a graveyard with his camera in hand. Their exchange begins lightly, with Shay asking why he has been brought there, but the visit leads to a discovery that changes Shay’s understanding of his family. Reading the dates beside the name Rudek Nowack, Shay realizes that Rudek died in 1998 and asks who he was. Ollie tells him that Rudek was his father. Leeds is therefore not merely where the reunion occurs: it is where a concealed relationship is made explicit.

Family History in the City

The account Ollie gives also places Leeds within a longer family movement. Shay’s grandparents came to the country in the 1960s, settled in London, and ran a café in Vauxhall for years. Their two sons left London sometime in the 1980s and both ended up in Leeds. Ollie supposes that cheaper housing may have drawn them there, while making clear that he does not know this for certain. The family’s connection to Leeds thus sits alongside its London history, linking the city to the generations and circumstances behind Shay’s newly disclosed origins.

Narrative Significance

The city gathers two strands of the story: Shay and Ollie’s hoped-for future together and Shay’s encounter with a past he did not know. The promised wait of two days gives way to the graveyard disclosure, where the discovery of his father makes family history immediate rather than abstract. Leeds also appears in Ollie’s account as a destination chosen by the previous generation, giving the location a place in both the personal reunion and the family’s migration story.
