Ollie and Feodor and Oliwia

The Edge of the World

Ollie’s relationship with his grandparents, Feodor and Oliwia, is marked by a familiar balance of scrutiny and tenderness. Feodor presses him to stay connected to family and asks searching questions, while Oliwia’s care is expressed through food, hospitality, and physical affection. When Shay visits, their attention turns toward him too, making the grandparents’ home a place where Ollie’s private attachment is noticed and welcomed rather than left unspoken.

Family Care in Different Forms

Ollie describes his grandparents as having long-established, complementary ways of dealing with him. Feodor takes him apart with quiet questions; Oliwia, by contrast, kills him with kindness and food. Their approach is more difficult for Ollie than his parents’ nagging, but he never stays away for long. The relationship therefore holds both pressure and attachment: Feodor’s probing can make a visit demanding, yet the pull of the family bond is strong enough to bring Ollie back.

That pattern appears in the practical details of a visit. Ollie is trying to mend Feodor’s Sky box so his grandfather can binge-watch On the Buses. The task places their time together amid ordinary household activity, but Feodor uses the conversation to raise a larger family obligation: Ollie should visit his mother. Ollie says he may do so after his next stretch on the road, explaining that his mother is busy and that previous visits have found nobody there. Feodor counters that Ollie should telephone first, distinguishing his mother’s circumstances from those of the older, housebound grandparents.

Ollie answers by teasing Feodor about having gone to the bingo hall the night before. Feodor’s sheepish grin confirms the joke, though his searching attention does not go away. The exchange lets affection and accountability coexist: Ollie can challenge the premise that his grandparents are helpless, but Feodor continues to insist that family contact requires effort. When Feodor does not repeat his reminder at the end of the visit, the omission itself carries the message. Ollie understands that his grandfather has not withdrawn his concern; he has chosen not to press it again.

Feodor’s Questions and Ollie’s Private Life

Feodor’s attention extends from Ollie’s family duties to the people close to him. He calls Shay Ollie’s friend and asks where Shay’s family is from, making clear that he means family origins rather than the city where Shay lives. The question resonates with the story’s interest in ancestry and belonging, but in this exchange it also shows Feodor taking an interest in someone important to his grandson.

Ollie does not easily escape that interest. After Feodor recognizes that Ollie has fallen in love with the subject of his work, Ollie needs a cigarette and continues repairing the television box while skirting his grandfather’s curiosity about Shay. Feodor’s observation is pointed, but it is not presented as a rejection or reprimand. Instead, it makes visible what Ollie would rather evade: the documentary project and his feelings for its subject have become difficult to separate. Feodor’s questions reach into that private life in the same way his earlier questions reached into Ollie’s obligations to his mother.

The visit also shows Ollie making room for Shay within the practical business of his own family relationships. He is concerned that they should leave because Shay is due back at work the next day, and he declines the coffee and cake Oliwia brings. Oliwia already knows that Shay likes her cake and invites Ollie to bring him back. Her welcome is concrete and future-facing: Shay is not treated as a visitor who must be kept at a distance, but as someone the family would be glad to see again.

Oliwia’s Welcome and Shay’s Place

When Shay appears, he confirms that they probably should leave, though he also has work of his own to finish. Ollie has watched him learning by instinct to play the instrument Ollie gave him and knows that Shay has been composing on it. That musical work remains outside the grandparents’ conversation, but it is part of what Ollie carries into the visit: Shay arrives not merely as the subject Feodor asks about, but as a person with his own work and plans.

The farewells make the welcome unmistakable. Oliwia hugs Shay, and Feodor does not renew his instruction to Ollie to visit his mother. On the way down the Underground escalators, Shay tells Ollie that he likes his grandparents. Ollie agrees that he likes them too, then notices Shay’s restless energy and wonders how much coffee he has had. The small exchange links Shay’s comfort with the family to Ollie’s own familiarity with them: he can affirm the bond without ceremony, then return to the easy observation and teasing that define their shared life.

Oliwia’s affection is expressed through a hug and an open invitation; Feodor’s regard appears through questions, close attention, and advice that persists even when he stops repeating it aloud. Neither form requires a formal declaration of acceptance. Together they make Shay’s visit a meaningful extension of Ollie’s family world, while leaving the difference between the grandparents’ two temperaments intact.

Relationship and Belonging

The grandparents’ welcome matters because it adds an everyday, domestic dimension to Ollie and Shay’s relationship. Feodor sees enough to identify Ollie’s feelings, while Oliwia’s offer to bring Shay back turns recognition into hospitality. Ollie’s family is therefore not only the source of expectations about visiting his mother; it is also a possible setting for the life he is building with Shay.

The scene does not resolve every tension in Ollie’s family life. He has not yet visited his mother, and Feodor’s reminder remains relevant even after the conversation moves on. Nor does the grandparents’ warmth erase the difference between their styles: Feodor keeps asking, while Oliwia feeds, hugs, and invites. What changes during the visit is that Shay becomes part of the circle of their attention. Ollie returns to the road with his grandfather’s unspoken reminder still understood and with Oliwia’s invitation extending beyond the farewell.
