River Corrib

The Edge of the World

The River Corrib frames a guarded encounter between Shay and Ollie outside a venue. Seen from its bank, Shay’s solitary gaze makes the river a backdrop to a moment of hesitation, then a small, wordless opening between them.

Setting and Appearance

Shay is alone beside a tree, leaning against it and staring out over the River Corrib. Ollie finds him there and pauses, uncertain whether to approach; Shay seems as though he does not want to be disturbed. The scene establishes the river as the place where their encounter begins, while Shay’s stillness gives the setting its emotional charge.

Role in the Encounter

Ollie moves closer after lighting a cigarette. The click of his lighter carries on the wind, and Shay turns as Ollie blows smoke into the sky. Though Shay’s expression remains unreadable, he eventually jerks his head to signal that Ollie should join him. He then takes the cigarette from Ollie’s hand and draws deeply on it. At the river, distance gives way to an understated gesture of permission: Shay does not explain his mood, but allows Ollie to remain beside him.
