Rudek Nowack murders Ava Martin and dies by suicide in prison

The Edge of the World

Rudek Nowack’s murder of Ava Martin and his later death by suicide in prison are disclosed to Shay Maloney through a newspaper report that turns a past crime into a revelation about Shay’s family. The account establishes that Rudek was Shay’s father, records earlier warnings of violence against Ava, and distinguishes her from Shay’s mother.

The Report and the Murder

Ollie Pietruska presents Shay with a newspaper report from 1997. It says that Ava Martin disappeared on her way home from work and that her body was found on Hawksworth Moor three days later. The report identifies her ex-boyfriend, Rudek Nowack, as her murderer.

Shay asks whether the murderer was his father, and Ollie confirms that Rudek was. The news shifts the report from an account of an unsolved disappearance into a disclosure about Shay’s own origins: his father had committed murder.

Prior Violence and the Case

Ollie qualifies what he knows about the killing, saying that, as far as he understands, it was not premeditated. He also describes Rudek as having multiple prior convictions for petty violence and drug offences. These details place the murder against a history of recorded offending rather than presenting it as an event without warning signs.

Ava had reported Rudek for domestic violence more than once, but no charges had been filed. The reports establish that concerns about his conduct had reached the authorities before her death, while also noting that those complaints did not lead to charges.

Conviction and Disclosure

Rudek was tried and convicted. After receiving a life sentence, he died by suicide in Wakefield Prison not long afterward. The account thus gives the legal aftermath as well as the murder: conviction and imprisonment followed, but Rudek’s death came before the story of his crime was disclosed to Shay.

Shay reacts to learning that his father was a murderer by tightening his grip on the newspaper until it crumples; Ollie takes it from him. Shay then asks whether Ava was his mother, and Ollie says she was not. The exchange leaves two separate facts in view: Rudek’s identity as Shay’s father and Ava’s place in the crime, not as Shay’s mother but as its victim.
