Your people

The Edge of the World

Your people is Larry’s wry label for the Irish, offered as though Shay Maloney’s connection to them were obvious. The phrase turns the tour’s Dublin-to-Derby itinerary into a claim about heritage, while exposing the gap between the identity Larry assumes and the one Shay privately believes to be true.

The Exchange

Larry, the band’s percussionist, tells Shay that the Irish are his people. Shay asks who he means; Larry answers that he means the Irish and explains that the tour was arranged to begin and end with their leader’s heritage, travelling from Dublin to Derby. The phrase therefore refers both to a national group and to the itinerary Larry presents as a deliberate frame for the tour.

The Assumption and Its Irony

Larry delivers the remark deadpan, treating Shay’s supposed Irishness as common knowledge rather than a question. Shay’s response to the assumption is not an explanation: he watches Larry walk away and remains unsettled. Privately, he knows that his name is a lie and believes he has no more Gaelic blood than Larry, who is Cuban-born. The phrase’s friendly certainty thus lands against Shay’s concealed doubt about his ancestry.

Meaning in Context

The exchange gives a casual expression an undercurrent of misrecognition. For Larry, shared heritage neatly bookends the journey from Dublin to Derby; for Shay, the same claim presses on a fragile, unspoken uncertainty about who he is. The wording matters not because Larry intends a serious inquiry, but because his offhand assumption touches a question Shay cannot answer with confidence.
