Mustang

The Eight Mountains: A Novel

Mustang is an arid plateau on the border with Tibet, described through small white houses clinging to red rock. Its brief appearance places Pietro far from home in Nepal, yet still within reach of family news: while he is there in June, a letter from his mother tells him that Lara is five months pregnant.

Setting and Description

The account offers a spare, sharply defined landscape rather than an extended portrait of Mustang. White houses stand against red rock on an arid plateau; the few details establish a striking contrast with the Alpine setting of Grana, where Lara lives and works. Mustang is presented as a particular place on Pietro’s travels, not as a generalized image of Nepal.

Pietro’s Stay and News from Home

Pietro is in Mustang while working in Nepal with nongovernmental organizations and filming documentaries in villages. His mother’s letter brings the life he has left behind into this distant setting: she has gone to Grana and discovered that Lara is expecting a child. The distance does not cut off communication, but it means that Pietro learns about the pregnancy through reports sent from home rather than by being there himself.

The news is followed by his mother’s summer updates about Lara. She reports Lara’s twisted ankle, a bout of sunstroke while making hay, and her continued work carrying cheese down from the pasture despite pregnancy. These reports belong to Pietro’s wider Nepal stay, which later brings him to Kathmandu during the monsoon; the narrative does not establish that these later updates arrive while he is still in Mustang.

Narrative Role

Mustang’s importance lies in the conjunction of remoteness and connection. The plateau situates Pietro away from Grana and the coming birth, while his mother’s letter makes that family life present across the distance. The location receives little description, but its position in the narrative makes clear that Pietro’s travels abroad do not sever his ties to home: news from Grana reaches him even at the edge of his journey.
