Lee Powers

The Exception

Lee Powers is Simon Powers’s father and the person whose actions, as later established through an investigation, caused the death of Cane Alexander’s father. Though Lee appears chiefly through Cane’s account of the past, his involvement in a contested Queen Creek property deal makes him central to the history behind the Powers–Alexander conflict.

Identity and Background

Lee is identified as the father of Simon Powers. The account of him comes from Cane, who recounts the events to Jada Stanley while explaining why he immediately suspected Lee after his father died. The evidence gives no fuller personal history for Lee, but it establishes him as a property-seeker willing to interfere with other buyers to improve his own prospects.

The Queen Creek Property Dispute

Cane recalls that his father had decided to buy a property in Queen Creek belonging to a widow, despite its poor condition. Lee also wanted a small piece of land beside it. According to Cane, Lee was driving potential buyers away so that he could eventually obtain the parcel at a lower price. The account thus links Lee’s pursuit of the adjoining land to a deliberate effort to manipulate the sale, rather than presenting the conflict as a simple competition between buyers.

Cane’s Father’s Death

While speaking with Cane by phone about the property and his plans, Cane’s father said he thought he was being followed. He described the car behind him as driving erratically, then ended the call. About an hour later, Max Quinn called Cane to tell him that his father had died in a car crash. Cane says he immediately thought of Lee, but the police initially ruled the death an accident. He returned home and hired a private investigator; Nick Parker worked on the case for several months before the investigation proved Lee had caused the crash. The account does not establish whether Lee was arrested or what ultimately happened to him.

Conflict and Narrative Significance

Lee’s connection to Simon gives the property dispute a family dimension: the man Cane identifies as responsible for his father’s death is also the father of Simon, whose later conflict with Cane is marked by old grievances and resentment. Lee’s role is therefore both specific and structural. His attempt to gain land through interference culminates in a death that the authorities first misread as accidental, while the eventual investigative finding reveals the concealed cause behind Cane’s suspicion. The revelation recasts the feud as more than personal antagonism, grounding it in a past act that joins business rivalry to family loss.
