Lili

The Friend

In the Hungarian film White God, Lili is Hagen’s beloved human companion, separated from him when her father refuses to pay a tax imposed on owners of dogs that are not purebred. Her efforts to find him continue while he is driven through a succession of dangers. At the film’s final confrontation, she recalls that playing her school-orchestra horn used to soothe him; the music calms Hagen and then the dogs gathered behind him, briefly interrupting the threat of violence.

Identity and Bond with Hagen

Lili is introduced as the girl who loves Hagen, a mixed-breed dog whose life with her ends when her father rejects the tax demanded of owners of non-purebred dogs. Their relationship gives the film’s account of Hagen’s ordeal its personal stakes: after he is cast out, he tries to find his way back to Lili, while she does all she can to find him.

Separation and Search

The separation places Lili and Hagen on parallel paths. Lili searches for him as he is thwarted by dogcatchers and later subjected to brutal training to fight. The evidence does not detail the course of her search, but establishes that she continues trying to recover him while their circumstances diverge: Hagen is transformed by what is done to him, and Lili remains associated with the companionship they shared before his abandonment.

The Final Encounter

Lili meets Hagen again in the courtyard of the slaughterhouse where her father works as a meat inspector. Hagen bares his teeth and snarls; around him, the dogs he has gathered are prepared to strike. Frightened, Lili remembers that Hagen used to like her playing her horn, an instrument she carries in her backpack for the school orchestra. She takes it out and plays. Hagen calms and lies down, and the other dogs follow, growing quiet and lying down as well. Lili continues playing, prolonging the brief peace.

Narrative Role and Ending

Lili’s music changes the immediate course of the confrontation, but it does not reverse the events that brought Hagen and the dogs there. The film’s account explicitly denies a happy ending: the dogs are doomed, even though they have taken revenge. Lili’s reunion with Hagen therefore offers a moment of recognition and calm within an unresolved, violent outcome. Her bond with him remains powerful enough to reach him, but it cannot restore the life they had before the separation.
