National Service Animal Registry

The Friend

The National Service Animal Registry enters the narrative as the source of a certificate and badge used in the narrator’s effort to keep Apollo in her apartment. Its role is practical but limited in the evidence: the narrator uses the certificate in a housing dispute while distinguishing that request from permission to bring Apollo into places where dogs are not normally allowed.

Credential and Use

When the certificate arrives, the narrator briefly wafts it beneath Apollo’s nose, then attaches it to the refrigerator with a magnet. The gesture makes the credential part of the household, even as the narrator recognizes the controversy surrounding claims that ordinary pets are service animals. She has heard of a skunk in a college dorm, an iguana in a restaurant, and a pig on an airplane, and acknowledges the anger of people with genuine animal-support needs toward such misuse.

Housing Request and Limits

The narrator makes a copy of the certificate and sends it to the building management agent as support for her request to keep Apollo as an emotional support animal. She says she will not take him anywhere he would not ordinarily be permitted and will leave both the certificate and the Registry badge at home. The distinction in her account is between presenting documentation in a housing matter and using it to seek broader access for Apollo.

Outcome and Narrative Significance

Hector later tells the narrator that the management agent advised the landlord not to contest the request, in part because no other tenants had complained about Apollo. The account does not establish that the Registry itself intervened or that its credential determined the decision; it records the certificate as part of the narrator’s case, alongside the lack of complaints. The Registry therefore appears less as an institution with a described structure or methods than as the provider of documentation at the boundary between an apartment’s dog prohibition and the narrator’s request for an accommodation.
