Rachel tries to take Eve away

The Girl on the Train

Rachel tries to take Evie away in an episode that exposes both the danger of her unstable attachment to Tom Watson’s family and Tom’s capacity to protect her publicly while threatening her in private. Recalling the incident later, Rachel corrects what she had told the police: she had crossed into Tom and Anna Watson’s home, taken their sleeping baby, and carried her outside, though Rachel still cannot explain what she intended to do.

The Visit and the Taking

Rachel’s later account begins with an admission that she had not rung the doorbell, as she had previously suggested. Unsure what she wanted, she went along the pathway, crossed the fence, and approached the sliding doors. Inside, Anna was asleep on the sofa, and Evie was asleep in her carrycot beside her. Rachel picked up the baby and hurried outside. She remembers running towards the fence as Evie began to wake and cry; she says she was not going to hurt her, but cannot say what she thought she was doing.

Anna’s Intervention and Tom’s Response

As Rachel reached the fence, a train approached and Anna rushed towards her. Anna took Evie from Rachel, who tried to run but fell. Anna ordered her to stay and threatened to call the police; after calling Tom, she remained distressed and wanted Rachel arrested for kidnapping. Tom came home, calmed Anna, and persuaded her not to pursue the matter. He then drove Rachel home. What Rachel had understood as reassurance became a private warning: Tom tightened his grip on her hand and threatened to kill her if she ever harmed his daughter.

A Memory Reframed

Rachel recounts the incident while considering whether to apologize to Tom, fearing that he might show a message to Anna or the police. The memory therefore revises not only the details of her earlier police account but also her understanding of Tom’s intervention. He had shielded her from Anna’s immediate attempt to involve the police, yet the ride home revealed that his protection came with a threat. Rachel’s uncertainty about her own intention remains unresolved; she distinguishes it from an intention to harm Evie without being able to explain why she took the baby.

The Garden’s Later Echo

The garden fence becomes a point of return in the later confrontation between Rachel and Tom. When Tom pursues her through the garden, Rachel reaches the same area where she had once stood holding his child, with the fence behind her and the railway tracks nearby. The earlier episode thus acquires a grim second meaning: a place where Rachel had carried Tom’s daughter away from the house becomes the setting for her final struggle with him. The remembered act also complicates the story’s account of Rachel, making her earlier conduct toward Anna’s family impossible to reduce either to a harmless visit or to a fully understood plan.
