Go to the mattresses
The GodfatherGo to the mattresses is the Corleone Family’s expression for entering a full-scale war between organized crime families. It does not describe a single attack. It names the logistical and strategic transition from ordinary operations to a concealed wartime system, in which soldiers are housed in secret apartments, supplied with food and weapons, and deployed from hidden bases.
Meaning and Wartime Practice
Whenever conflict between the Families became intensely bitter, the combatants established secret apartments where their soldiers could sleep on mattresses scattered through the rooms. The arrangement protected neither only the families of the combatants nor merely the organization’s privacy. Noncombatants were not normally considered legitimate targets because every Family understood that attacks on wives and children would invite similar retaliation. The more immediate purpose was to prevent opponents, and sometimes interfering police, from charting the men’s everyday movements.
A trusted caporegime ordinarily rented the apartment and arranged its contents. The headquarters functioned as a sally port into the city when an offensive was mounted: a concealed place from which armed men could emerge, rest, receive instructions, and return without exposing a fixed domestic routine. The mattresses therefore signify more than sleeping quarters. They represent a temporary military infrastructure built inside the city’s ordinary residential space.
The Expression in the 1947 War
The phrase became operationally decisive when the Five Families attacked the Corleone Family from several directions. Two powerful garment-union officials who belonged to the Corleone Family were killed; Corleone Family shylocks and bookmakers were excluded from the waterfront piers; longshoremen’s union locals shifted allegiance; bookmakers throughout the city were threatened; and the largest numbers banker in Harlem, an old Corleone ally, was brutally murdered. These actions made continued neutrality impossible.
With Vito Corleone still too weak to direct the Family, Santino Corleone faced a conflict in which the Family’s income was exposed and its political protection was weakened. Tom Hagen explained that the Corleone Family relied heavily on bookmaking and policy operations, while the Tattaglia Family controlled prostitution, call girls, and dock unions, and the other Families drew revenue from construction, shylocking, unions, government contracts, and forms of coercion less vulnerable on the street. Because the Corleone Family could not easily strike at those protected sources of income, Santino concluded that the organization had to prepare for open combat. After the attacks and defections continued, he ordered the caporegimes to go to the mattresses.
Organization and Cost
Two apartments were established in the city and furnished with mattresses, a refrigerator, guns, and ammunition. Peter Clemenza staffed one apartment and Salvatore Tessio the other. Corleone Family bookmakers received bodyguard teams, while the policy bankers in Harlem had already defected and could not immediately be recovered. The arrangement transformed the Family’s scattered personnel into a concealed fighting force, but it also imposed a heavy financial burden at the moment when ordinary revenue was collapsing.
The war exposed weaknesses that years of peace had concealed. Vito Corleone’s incapacity neutralized much of the Family’s political strength. Clemenza remained a capable executioner and administrator but lacked the energy and youthful strength to lead troops; Tessio had mellowed and was no longer ruthless enough; and Tom Hagen, despite his abilities, was considered poorly suited to serve as wartime consigliere because he was not Sicilian. Santino recognized that the Family had overmatched itself, yet he could not simply replace these senior figures: he was not the Don, and changing the command structure might provoke treachery or make the danger worse.
The expression thus carries an economic consequence as well as a military one. Going to the mattresses requires the organization to maintain hidden personnel, weapons, food, and protection teams while its visible businesses are disrupted. It is a commitment to absorb losses for the sake of survival, not a theatrical declaration of aggression detached from material realities.
Earlier Preparation and Broader Significance
The practice was already visible in Peter Clemenza’s solution to a problem involving a suspected informer. He proposed telling Paulie Gatto that the day’s assignment was to find an apartment in case the Family decided to go to the mattresses. The explanation gave Clemenza, Rocco Lampone, and Gatto a plausible shared mission while preserving the secrecy of the operation. It also exploited Gatto’s greed: Clemenza expected that Gatto might wonder how much money Virgil Sollozzo would pay for such valuable intelligence.
The expression belongs to a larger political and economic system in which the Corleone Family treats protection, loyalty, favors, and violence as interconnected forms of governance. Vito Corleone builds authority by helping poor neighborhood residents, influencing elections, supporting promising young men through college, and using political contacts to protect the Family’s interests. He also seeks peace among underworld organizations so that each can preserve its internal authority and prosper. Yet the same system turns a refused favor into aggression and makes commercial disagreement inseparable from armed conflict.
That contradiction gives Go to the mattresses its full narrative force. The Corleone Family presents itself as orderly, disciplined, and protective, but its order depends on the capacity to withdraw into secret rooms and impose its will through force. The mattresses mark the boundary between the Family’s public face as a network of businesses and favors and its concealed identity as a military organization. Once the phrase is spoken as an order, ordinary commerce, negotiation, and movement give way to siege conditions, and the Family’s claim to govern its own world is tested by the violence required to defend it.
