Anna Raphael
The GodmotherAnna Raphael is Will Raphael’s sister and an active intermediary in his growing connection with Rachel Elliot. She enters Rachel Elliot’s story through an encounter in central London, then makes a deliberate effort to bring Rachel Elliot and Will Raphael together, turning her concern for her brother into practical intervention.
Identity and Introduction
Anna Raphael appears when Rachel Elliot and Jessica are hurrying toward Covent Garden. A young woman with long black hair, watchful dark eyes, and a distinctive smile, she jogs through the trees after Jack, a boy in a blue pom-pom hat who has retrieved a ball and handed it back to him. Anna Raphael says she is also going to Covent Garden, where she takes a dance class on Floral Street. Her joking description of the class, and her acknowledgment that Jack gets bored while she attends it, give the brief meeting an easy, conversational character.
As the group walks toward Trafalgar Square, Anna Raphael recognizes Rachel Elliot and thanks her for what she has done for Will Raphael. The gratitude establishes that Rachel Elliot has already mattered to her brother, though Anna Raphael does not explain the circumstances in that conversation. Her response is warm and direct: she does not treat Rachel Elliot as a stranger, but as someone whose effect on Will Raphael she has noticed and values.
Concern for Will Raphael
Anna Raphael later invites Rachel Elliot to her home and reveals that the invitation has a purpose beyond catching up. She wants to consult Rachel Elliot about Will Raphael, whom she describes as having been miserable recently because of her. The disclosure complicates her earlier thanks: Anna Raphael has seen Rachel Elliot lift her brother’s spirits, but also recognizes that his feelings about her are now a source of distress.
Her approach is both candid and protective. While explaining herself, Anna Raphael rolls a cigarette with practiced movements, concentrating on the task as she admits why she wanted Rachel Elliot to visit. She does not leave the matter at observation or sympathy; she takes responsibility for creating a chance for the two to speak, despite their uncertainty and embarrassment.
The Dinner She Arranges
Anna Raphael has prepared a meal and set the scene for a private meeting: lasagne and garlic bread are in the oven, salad is in the refrigerator, and champagne has been opened but is optional. Rachel Elliot notices that the table has only two place settings and jokes that one of the expected guests may not have been anticipated. Anna Raphael answers by making clear that she herself is leaving, not staying to join them.
When Rachel Elliot moves toward the hall, Anna Raphael blocks the way and insists that neither guest is going anywhere. She then departs, leaving Rachel Elliot and Will Raphael alone together, with the food ready and no requirement that they speak if they cannot find the words. Her playful suggestion that they could watch television and treat it as babysitting softens the force of the arrangement without concealing it: Anna Raphael has engineered an opportunity for a conversation between them.
Narrative Role
Anna Raphael’s role is small in duration but consequential in action. She connects Rachel Elliot’s earlier kindness to Will Raphael with his present unhappiness, then acts on what she knows by arranging their meeting. Her practical hospitality, frankness, and willingness to remove herself from the scene make her an effective catalyst rather than a passive observer. The encounter ends not with a resolution between Rachel Elliot and Will Raphael, but with Anna Raphael having cleared space for one.
