Naomi Fullerton

The Godmother

Naomi Fullerton is an old friend of Rachel Elliot whose visit to Rachel’s office reveals a marriage ending after fifteen years and four children. Facing a divorce and a lawyer’s appointment, Naomi also has to arrange care for Jessica, her seven-year-old daughter and Rachel’s goddaughter; her brief visit brings marital loss and the practical work of parenting into the same scene.

Identity and Introduction

Naomi arrives unexpectedly at Rachel’s office, having come from Suffolk. Her petite frame is enveloped by a voluminous Laura Ashley dress, and her chestnut hair streams from a thick gold hairband. Rachel recognizes her as an old friend, while Melissa appears behind her, concerned at the sudden interruption. Naomi’s entrance is at once familiar and unsettling: she gestures around the office as she considers the life and opportunities she feels she might have had.

Marriage and Divorce

Naomi tells Rachel that Graham wants a divorce after fifteen years of marriage and the birth of their four children. She says he has been having an affair for two years with a primary-school teacher and has moved into the other woman’s small house on the edge of an estate. Graham, she reports, has offered her whatever she wants, but the immediate next step is a meeting with a lawyer.

Naomi’s account also revises her understanding of the marriage. She says she had been grateful when Graham lost interest in sex, because she had never been particularly keen on it and found that raising children left her tired. She had believed that their family and house were enough to sustain the relationship; the divorce makes clear to her that she was mistaken. Her reflection gives the breakup a particular shape: what she had regarded as an acceptable arrangement did not mean the marriage was secure.

Motherhood and Rachel’s Help

Although Naomi is on her way to meet a lawyer, she has brought Jessica with her and asks Rachel to keep an eye on the child for a couple of hours. She has left her other three children with her own mother, whom she says finds their care difficult. Naomi explains that she needs to attend the appointment alone so that she can concentrate.

Jessica, wearing white knee socks and an Alice band, clings warily to the panels of her mother’s dress before Naomi encourages her to go with Rachel. The arrangement makes the consequences of the marital crisis immediate and practical: Naomi must address the end of her marriage while continuing to coordinate care for four children. It also draws on Rachel’s role as Jessica’s godmother, making their old friendship a source of short-term support without suggesting that Rachel can resolve Naomi’s larger predicament.

Narrative Role and Unresolved Future

Naomi’s visit places a friend’s domestic upheaval within Rachel’s professional world. The office she regards as evidence of a life she might have had contrasts with the years she has spent building a family, while her lawyer’s meeting and childcare request show how little room the crisis leaves for abstract reflection. The episode establishes the circumstances Naomi faces, but does not disclose the outcome of the divorce or what she decides to seek from Graham.
