The First Interception

The First Interception
Racing toward contact
After a direction-finding report identifies a likely enemy transmission, Keeling leaves its screening position and accelerates toward the bearing. George Krause uses radar to approach a surfaced submarine hidden by poor visibility.
The target dives
The submarine disappears before Keeling can open fire. Keeling slows to restore sonar, and the pursuit changes from a visible interception into a difficult underwater search.
A new kind of battle
Sonar contact brings Keeling into a close contest of course changes and delayed reports. The destroyer must anticipate an enemy it cannot see and whose movements may already have changed before they reach the bridge.
The Ship Reenters the Fight

The Ship Reenters the Fight
Returning to the screen
After the first submarine is destroyed, Keeling heads back toward its convoy station. There is little time to rest: rockets report a torpedoing, and George Krause turns the ship toward the rear of the formation.
A dangerous crossing
Keeling threads its way between merchant ships at speed. In the confusion, it encounters a surfaced submarine and a burning wreck, while its own bridge is struck by friendly machine-gun fire.
A rescue and a renewed hunt
Keeling picks up four survivors from a raft, then resumes its search for enemy submarines. The ship’s work shifts repeatedly between attack, rescue, and escort without a clean boundary between them.
A Damaged Escort Survives

A Damaged Escort Survives
A close-range battle
Keeling returns to the fight as Dodge engages a submarine at close quarters. The enemy’s damaged maneuverability forces it to the surface, where gunfire and collision risk determine the outcome.
Damage aboard Keeling
Keeling’s guns destroy the submarine, but the blast and combat damage leave wreckage, fire, and casualties aboard. George Krause directs damage control while the convoy remains nearby and vulnerable.
Continuing under strain
The ship’s crew extinguishes the fire and the command resumes its escort duties. Keeling survives, but its offensive power has nearly run out, and its endurance now depends on disciplined repair and relief.
