Angie Faulconer

The Guilty

Angie Faulconer is Billy Faulconer’s wife and a newcomer to Cantrell. Through her meeting with Will Robie, the story presents both the hard circumstances surrounding the Faulconer household and the painful reality of Billy’s chosen refuge: an old trailer where he says he will die.

Identity and Background

Angie is not from Cantrell and did not attend school with Will Robie. She met Billy in Oxford, where he was working as a trucker and stopped for lunch at the diner where she worked. He returned repeatedly, and they eventually married; Angie then moved to Cantrell to live with him.

When Will arrives at the Faulconers’ small, run-down house, Angie appears at the screen door. The narrative describes her as tall and thin, with veined hands, short nails, wiry forearms, and dark curly hair turning gray. Her worn appearance and the lines in her face reflect the difficult life she has led on that patch of Mississippi soil.

Billy’s Illness and the Airstream

Angie guides Will through the backyard to a battered old Airstream trailer. Billy has repaired it after getting it from a friend of a friend, and he prefers to live there rather than in the house. His declaration that he will die in the trailer makes the vehicle more than a place to stay: it is where he has chosen to face the end of his life.

Angie explains that, after Billy dies, she can close up the trailer and leave him there—an arrangement she repeats lightly. Her averted gaze and the pain Will sees in her face make clear that the casual delivery masks grief. The scene sets Billy’s stated resolve against the distress of the person who will remain after him. Will’s account also notes Billy’s cancer and considers that it may have left him unable to work, while medical debt is presented as a possibility rather than a confirmed fact.

Encounters with Will and Reel

Angie welcomes Will into the house and introduces herself, then shares how she and Billy came to Cantrell. At the trailer, she tells Billy that she has brought someone he once knew well, serving as the link between Will and his former teammate.

Later, when Jessica Reel visits the Faulconers’ home to deliver something for Will, Angie says Billy is at work. The brief exchange shows Angie receiving another visitor on Will’s behalf, though the evidence does not specify what Reel intends to give Billy or what follows from the visit.
