Dan Robie Conceals the Truth About Will's Departure from Laura Barksdale

The Guilty

Dan Robie’s deception of Laura Barksdale is revealed during a confrontation that changes Will Robie’s understanding of what happened after he left. Dan had told Laura that Will had gone away to start fresh, allowing her to believe that Will had deliberately abandoned her. When Dan finally admits this, Will’s effort to speak openly about his own failures gives way to anger, and he walks out before that anger becomes action.

The revelation during Will’s confession

Will begins by trying to explain the demands of his work to Dan. He says that his job requires absolute precision, but that he had not been perfect on his last two missions. He admits that he killed someone he should not have killed and, on the next mission, saw a little boy and an old man who were not there. They existed only in his head. Although Will had rehearsed what he wanted to tell his father, he cannot get the rest of his words into order.

The case clock in the foyer ticks while father and son stare at one another. After the long pause, Dan introduces a different wound: he tells Will that he had told Laura that Will left without her. The disclosure abruptly redirects the conversation. Will experiences it like a bullet striking his brain and asks when Dan said it, trying to contain his reaction.

What Dan told Laura and why

Dan explains that Laura came by a few days after Will’s departure to ask where he was. Will’s belongings were gone, as was his old car, and he had left no note for Dan. Dan says he knew Will had left and feared that something might have happened to him. He strikes the table with his fist as he insists that anything could have happened to his son.

But Dan had not simply told Laura that Will was missing. He had told her that Will wanted to begin life afresh away from Cantrell. When Will says Dan had no right to tell her anything, Dan argues that being Will’s father gave him that right, even if Will had run away. He had interpreted Will’s departure without Laura as evidence that Will did not want her, and says he told her so outright. His explanation identifies the basis of the deception: Dan treated Will’s absence and silence as an answer about Laura, rather than leaving that answer for Will to give.

Laura’s response and the confrontation’s turn

Will asks what Laura did after hearing Dan’s account. Dan says she ran off crying. He lowers his head, and the anger that had marked his expression disappears. The account makes the consequence of his intervention immediate: Laura had come looking for Will, and Dan’s explanation left her in tears.

Will, however, feels his anger building. He tells Dan to shut up, and Dan looks up with anger of his own. Seeing Will’s expression, he appears afraid for his life, perhaps for the first time since Vietnam. Will turns and walks out before he does something he might regret. The scene thus ends not with reconciliation or an answer from Will about Laura, but with a physical withdrawal that interrupts the escalation.

Significance within the family conflict

The revelation exposes a second absence beneath Will’s departure: Laura was not simply left without an explanation from Will; Dan supplied one on his behalf. Dan’s fear for his son and his authority as a father are part of his defense, but his certainty about what Will’s departure meant caused him to speak for Will to Laura. The confession also lands at the moment Will is trying, unsuccessfully, to tell Dan about the failures and disturbing perceptions that have unsettled him. Instead of completing that confession, Will must confront a painful account of the past. His decision to leave preserves the possibility of continuing the conversation while preventing the immediate conflict from becoming irreversible.
